Corporate maturity is a valuable concept in that it provides a holistic view of an organization's performance, sustainability, and resilience. We present a general model of corporate maturity, which is applicable to any sector, with four main stages of development. We demonstrate how an organization can enhance its maturity through a focus on ethics, good governance, and community outcomes. We find that more mature organizations are those that find connections between corporate purpose and wider social and human needs. The authentic company, much in demand by investors, consumers, regulators, and employees is one that can be trusted to deliver these needs as result of deeply embedded integrity, uncompromising unconditionality and outcomes rooted in the community.

Beyond Compliance is about a necessary change in the way businesses carry out compliance, from expensive mechanical 'tick-boxing' to a much more mature, intelligent and lower cost 'judgment-based' compliance which aims to prevent problems occurring rather than treating symptoms and adds value by enhancing customer experience, reducing errors and complaints, reducing reputational damage and regulatory risk. It would work as a reference book in business as well as an academic text. This book includes: maturity matrices (a new measurement tool used in forthcoming ISO 37000).

The need for intermediaries to access resources, seek opportunities and mitigate risks has been observed in societies across the world. In poor people's lives such actors are often violent, however why this is the case remains under examined. This article offers a response to this question from Bangladesh based on an understanding of political order. When violence is not consolidated by a central state, political order stems from balancing the interests of diverse violence specialists dispersed throughout society. In such contexts mediating access to resources can be a means by which these actors accrue power and wealth, helping explain the link between intermediation and violence. This argument is developed through an ethnographic case of labourers in a large bazar at the centre of Dhaka city. The case illuminates the dynamics of political factionalism and violent mobilization within a fractious period in Bangladesh's recent history.

ABSTRACTContrary to the Weberian ideal of a central state monopolizing the means of violence, political order in many societies requires a balance of interests between diverse 'violence specialists'. In urban Bangladesh, gangsters have been identified as powerful actors, closely linked to politicians and the state. Often called mastan, they are portrayed as mediating access to work and public services, as running extortion networks and providing political muscle. Since the early 2000s Dhaka has seen radical change, largely undocumented to date: these gangsters are in significant decline. Many of the roles associated with these gangs continue, but now under the direct control of lower‐level factions associated with the ruling political party — a transition that has brought a greater degree of stability to the urban context. These arguments are developed through ethnographic research from a large marketplace in the centre of Dhaka, examining the rise and fall of an infamous local gangster. In developing this case, it is argued that closer attention should be given to changes in the organization of violence within societies.

This book presents a cross-regional comparative study of the role of capital cities and urbanization in the rise of authoritarianism. It explores the multiple ways in which authoritarian regimes have been attempting to build and sustain long-term dominance, drawing on six diverse case studies from Africa and Asia.

AbstractThe authority of political leaders in Bangladesh rests on diverse qualities, not least of which are the muscle and finance they can mobilize, and the relationships they can craft with senior party members. These are utilized to confront rivals both within and outside their own party. In some instances, the intensity of intra-party competition can be so severe that a further quality emerges: the capacity to find allies among enemies. Building local inter-party alliances can bolster the authority of politicians, yet be to the detriment of party coherence. This argument is developed through an analysis of mayoral and parliamentary elections held in the past decade in a small Bangladeshi city, where a ruling party member of parliament (MP) and opposition mayor appear to have developed such a relationship. This has thwarted the electoral ambitions of their fellow party members and has posed a serious challenge to party discipline. While political competition is often seen as being either inter- or intra-party, here it is focused around inter-party alliances. This portrayal suggests we need to give greater emphasis to the decentralized and local character that political authority can take in Bangladesh.
