"This book presents a critical understanding of Indian business situated as an encounter between indigeneity and Western modernity by exploring notions and practices of responsibility. It brings the paradoxical nature of Indian businesses to the fore: though they have a rich history of philanthropic contributions to social causes, they have also been known for labour rights and human rights violations, environmental abuses, destruction of habitats, pollution and corruption. The book shows how Indian firms straddle these two starkly contrasting positions and the many blends in between to conform to global developments in the pursuit of corporate social responsibility (CSR). It also looks at the emergent field of critical studies and analysis of CSR, especially from the context of a developing country. The objective of the study is to analyze the communicative experiences of Indian managers with other culture interactants from a geopolitical perspective of colonialism. The authors collected data from 21 Indian managers working in diverse industries with experience of working in multinational environments. The study discovered that contrary to the thesis of cultural distance that presupposes ease of communication with culturally proximal countries, Indian managers voice their predilection for working with the culturally distant West. This study contributes to intercultural communication literature by presenting an interpretation of such communication through a geopolitical perspective that recognizes colonialism and asymmetric power relations of global value chains (GVCs) as factors intersecting with intercultural discourses. It is in this aspect that studies focusing on intercultural business communication should go beyond the bounds of conformity to the essentialist cultural paradigm of Hofstede, Hall and Trompenaars to explore the complexities that underlie interpersonal conversations in multinational transactions beyond the stipulations of a semiotic focus. An important implication of this study is that training for intercultural business communication needs to go beyond sensitization to language and semiotics to address the evaluative compulsions that are triggered owing to years of subconscious conditioning by the potent geo-political and historic forces of colonization.

PurposeThis paper aims to examine the geographic distribution of social enterprises at the local sub-district level in one Indian state.Design/methodology/approachThis paper adopts a multimethod approach. The exploratory phase involved interviews and analysis of social enterprise distribution at the national level. Phase 2 involved mapping the distribution of social enterprises at the sub-district level in one state. Distribution around established social enterprises was plotted using latitude–longitude positions. Grounded theory approach to analysing qualitative data was adopted to identify the mechanism for agglomeration.FindingsSocial entrepreneurship sees the entrepreneurial problems as solving universalized social problems abstracting them out of the geo-historical and political economic context of the social problem. This study shows that solving a social problem is itself implicated in a social–historical organizational context of aid giving within developing countries. Networks of resources that early enterprises enable draw newer organizations toward them and lead to the formation of clusters. While such clusters might improve chances of enterprise survival, the phenomenon inadvertently leads to a new kind of inequity, as areas with fewer social enterprises lack the organizational infrastructure necessary for delivery of welfare.Research limitations/implicationsResearch in social enterprises needs to pay more attention to the context of the enterprises or society in addition to its current focus on universal social problems. Social enterprises themselves could be new sources of inequity in terms of the organizational infrastructure they represent.Originality/valuePolicymakers need to make directed efforts that respond not only to social problems but also to the socio-historic-organizational contexts where the problems are being solved and seeding the entrepreneurial effort in those spaces.

This special issue (SI) editorial contributes to ongoing efforts worldwide to decolonise management and organisational knowledge (MOK). A robust pluriversal discussion on the how and why of decolonisation is vital. Yet to date, most business and management schools are on the periphery of debates about decolonising higher education, even as Business Schools in diverse locations function as contested sites of neocolonialism and expansion of Western neoliberal perspectives. This editorial and special issue is the outcome of a unique set of relationships and processes that saw Organization host its first paper development workshop in Africa in 2019. This editorial speaks to a radical ontological plurality that up-ends the classical division between theory and praxis. It advocates praxistical theorising that moves beyond this binary and embraces decolonising knowledge by moving into the realm of affect and embodied, other-oriented reflexive, communicative praxis. It underscores the simultaneous, contested and unfinished decolonising-recolonising doubleness of praxis and the potential of borderlands locations to work with these dynamics. This special issue brings together a set of papers which advance different decolonising projects and grapple with the nuances of what it means to 'do' decolonising in a diversity of empirical and epistemic settings.
