Los sentimientos, los afectos constituyen expresiones emocionales que nos identifican como humanos y contribuyen a dotar de sentido a nuestro día a día pues, como recordara Jane Austen en su Sense and Sensibility, la vida no es sólo racionalidad, necesita hacer espacio a las emociones. En el ámbito de lo político no sucede otra cosa, evidentemente; las emociones representan expresiones de ligazón, de oposición, de lucha o de pacificación. En este ámbito, el examen de los recursos emocionales que se construyen a partir de los sustratos emocionales, resulta tan significativo como el análisis de las emociones puras pues implica la manipulación de éstas en el campo de juego de lo político con el fin de alcanzar los fines deseados. En esta contribución abordaremos el estudio de lo que las emociones políticas han representado en los estudios de Historia en general, e Historia Medieval en particular, utilizando aquí como caso de estudio la Corona de Castilla. Feelings, sentiments constitute emotional expressions that identify human beings and contribute to making sense of our day to day. As Jane Austen reminded in her Sense and Sensibility, life is not only something rational, it needs to make room for emotions. No other thing happens in the field of politics, where emotions represent expressions of bonding, of opposition, of fight and pacification. In this field, the analysis of emotional resources –built on the basis of emotions– is as significant as the study of pure emotions, since it implies the manipulation of these emotions inside the field game of politics in order to procure the desired ends. This contribution tackles the analysis of what political emotions have represented in the studies of History in general and of Medieval History in particular, using as a case study the Crown of Castile.

Fifteenth-century Castile, especially in the transition to Queen Isabella's rule, is victim to a high-intensity violence caused by the nobility pursuing political objectives linked to their contradictory association to royal power and the royal domain. In this last case, the violence of the nobility is not just an expression of force but an instrument of legitimation for the same violence and its profits. Towns acted in a similar manner, manipulating the perception of that violence in order to blame the nobility. In addition, towns were able to enlist the cooperation of some noble lineages, who got involved in the active and public defense of urban interests in exchange for lucrative compensations. Given the nature of the towns and lordships involved, the Sierra of Castilla-La Mancha proves an ideal testing ground for this analytical model. Durante el siglo XV y sobre todo en el paso a la monarquía isabelina, Castilla experimenta un alto nivel de violencia causado por una nobleza que persigue unos objetivos políticos ligados a su vinculación contradictoria con el poder regio y el realengo. En este último caso, la violencia noble no sólo constituye una manifestación de fuerza sino un instrumento de legitimación de la misma violencia y sus ganancias. Las ciudades operaron de manera similar, manipulando la percepción de esa violencia para construir el reproche ejercido contra la nobleza. Pero también demostraron su capacidad para atraer la cooperación de algunos linajes nobles, incorporándolos a la defensa activa y pública de los intereses urbanos mediante un marco de contraprestaciones atractivo. Dados los concejos y señoríos implicados, el ámbito de la serranía castellano-manchega constituye un espacio idóneo donde ensayar este análisis.

El objetivo de este estudio es reflexionar acerca de ciertas estrategias de acción político-social capaces de redefinir la intensidad y profundidad de las políticas de dominación y de la dominación misma: las acciones de integración y exclusión política. Se sostiene que la operación de las estrategias de integración y exclusión no constituyen únicamente el resultado de la acción y decisión de los grupos dominantes sino que, sobre todo en el caso de la integración, esos resultados son el producto de los acuerdos alcanzados entre los diversos segmentos de la estructura social. Esto es especialmente cierto en aquellas coyunturas políticas potencialmente lesivas para los intereses del conjunto de una comunidad dada; lo que puede explicar la adopción de políticas ampliamente consensuadas de bien común, así como la incorporación al proceso de toma de decisiones (en sus diversos escalones) de representantes de los diversos grupos sociales que integran esa comunidad. A tal fin, se utilizará como laboratorio de análisis el concejo de Cuenca en el siglo XV. ; The aim of this paper is to reflect on certain strategies of sociopolitical action capable of redefining the intensity and depth of politics of domination and of domination itself: the politics of inclusion and exclusion. I will contend that politics of inclusion and exclusion are not only the product of the dominant group's action and decision but, especially in the case of inclusion, those results are the product of a negotiation between the segments integrating the social structure. This is especially true in the case of those political conjectures potentially damaging to the collective interests of a given community. This fact can explain, on the one hand, the adoption of politics of common good largely based on consensus; and on the other hand, the incorporation to the decision-making process of the representatives of the social groups integrating the community. To this end, I will use the city of Cuenca in the fifteenth century as a case study. ; Este estudio se ha realizado en el marco del proyecto de investigación Fundamentos de identidad política: la construcción de identidades políticas urbanas en la Península Ibérica en el tránsito a la modernidad, concedido por el Ministerio de Ciencia e Innovación (HAR2009-08946), y dirigido por la Dra. In the frame of the process of political centralization undertook by the Trastámaras, in special during the fifteenth century, scholars have traditionally regarded the institution of the «corregimiento» (the «corregidores» –keepers of the town– were royal agents appointed to oversee the government and, in general, administration of royal cities and towns) as one of the most perfect instruments highlighting the stages and intensity with which that aim was achieved. Historians have considered the imposition of the «corregimientos» over the towns as a defeat of the urban world, as a trait of weakness on the part of those towns especially predisposed to subject themselves to the political interference represented by these royal officials. Nevertheless, we know that towns were able to face the imposition of these agents with some degree of success. In some circumstances, they not only managed to avoid the appointment or even the effective inauguration into office of these officials but, in many cases, the «corregidor» inauguration constituted the last phase in a process of negotiation not necessarily conducted with the monarch but singularly with the royal agent. These negotiations helped to lubricate the relationship thus generated between both parties, redefining it in terms of political cooperation. The aim of this paper is to demonstrate the way in which these royal agents were perceived in the frame of those processes of relationship –sometimes endowed with a conflictive nature, sometimes showing negotiating traits–, and the ability showed by cities and towns to develop an autonomous political action in the frame of the more global process of political centralization. The terminus ad quem of this paper is the Toledo of 1480, it implies the beginning of a different phase in the process of institutional consolidation of the «corregimiento». ; En el marco del proceso de centralización política emprendida por la dinastía Trastámara, especialmente a lo largo del siglo XV, la institución del corregimiento ha sido tradicionalmente considerada como uno de los más perfectos instrumentos que ilustran las etapas e intensidad con la que se avanzó en el desarrollo de ese objetivo. La imposición de corregimientos a las ciudades ha sido considerada por la historiografía como una suerte de derrota del mundo urbano, de especial debilidad de aquellos concejos más proclives a someterse a la injerencia de estos oficiales regios. Sin embargo, nos consta que las ciudades fueron capaces de enfrentarse a la imposición de estos agentes con cierto grado de éxito. No solo lograron, en determinadas circunstancias, evitar el nombramiento o el recibimiento del oficial sino que, en muchos casos, la recepción del corregidor constituyó la fase final de un proceso de negociación llevado adelante no necesariamente con el monarca sino singularmente con el agente regio. Una negociación que lubricó la relación así generada entre ambas partes, rediseñándola en términos de colaboración política. El objeto de este estudio es precisamente poner de manifiesto el modo en el que se percibe a estos agentes regios en el contexto de esos procesos de relación, conflictiva en unas ocasiones, negociada en otras, y la capacidad de acción política autónoma que cabe atribuir a las ciudades en ese marco de política centralizadora. El terminus ad quem del estudio viene constituido por la inauguración de la monarquía isabelina, que supone, ya desde las Cortes de Toledo de 1480, el inicio de una fase distinta en el proceso de consolidación de la institución del corregimiento.

Seigneurial pressure, exerted on cities and towns and their municipal jurisdictions by the nobility, constituted one of the dominant traits of Castilian politics in the 15th century. Notwithstanding the extent and intensity that this pressure might reach in general, few cities and towns were subjected to the (individual or coordinated) actions of important numbers of noblemen. This was the case of the city of Cuenca. This was one of the reasons explaining the relative success achieved by the city in fighting these agreesions. The presence of a significant number of noblemen, each of them seeking their own interest, lessened (relatively) their ability to depradate Cuenca's hinterland. This constriction (over the city and its jurisdiction) also influenced both elites and commoners to adopt a cooperative line of action. This way, Cuenca body politic laid out the key political traits of its communal political identity. These policies and marks of identity were observed throughout the years of civil war and, at least, until the beginning of the reign of Elizabeth I, when the pressure exerted by the nobility was reduced to a reasonable dimension.

By and large the world of business and money in the Middle Ages (and beyond the Middle Ages) is linked to a perception of the «economic fact» that absorbs everything or, at least, places it on a basic socio-political perspective. These approaches being correct, nevertheless, dealing that is participating in some manner in the broad field of economic management had, on occasion, a social dimension that transcended by far the possible economic profit any businessman could naturally aspire to, even casting a shadow over the economic profit, reducing that aspect of his activity to the persecution of a purely social and ideological benefit. This profit did not derive straight from the specific economic activity but from the perception by the community of the reasons underlying the agent's «extra-economic behaviour». This perception and the evaluation of these conducts, and the actors' persecution of a behavioural model that positively fixed into that perception frame, explain a whole set of economical attitudes linked to the referential frameworks «service» and «common good». These attitudes were pursued by these individuals, were promoted by urban governments, and were positively perceived by the entire community. ; Generalmente, el mundo de los negocios y el dinero en la Edad Media (y más allá de la Edad Media) se halla vinculado a una percepción del «hecho económico» que lo absorbe todo o, cuando mucho, sitúa aquel en una perspectiva socio-política básica. Si bien estos enfoques son correctos, negociar, es decir, participar de alguna manera en el amplio campo de la gestión económica, tuvo, en ocasiones, una dimensión social que trascendió con mucho el posible beneficio económico al que un hombre de negocios podía naturalmente aspirar, hasta incluso ensombrecer el propio beneficio económico, reduciendo ese aspecto de su actividad a la persecución de otro beneficio, este puramente social e ideológico. Este beneficio no derivaba directamente de la actividad económica sino de la percepción que la comunidad tenía de la conducta «extra-económica» del individuo. Esta percepción y enjuiciamiento conductual, y la persecución por parte de estos actores de un modelo de conducta que encajara positivamente en ese marco de percepción, explican todo un conjunto de actitudes económicas vinculadas a los marcos referenciales «servicio» y «bien común», perseguidas por sujetos, promovidas por las autoridades urbanas y percibidas positivamente por el conjunto de la comunidad.

It is a well-known fact that political relationships between the nobility and towns in fifteenth-century Castile possessed a basically conflictive nature. John II's minority and the continuous episodes of civil war that followed one another during the reigns of John II and Henry IV, until the triumph of the Elizabethan party in 1480, facilitated the use of violence by the nobility, especially as an instrument for the appropriation of royal justice and revenues, and the illegal seizure of districts under municipal jurisdiction. While not denying this reality, the aim of this work is to analyze the way in which the towns tried to solve these conflicts not only by exerting their own violence but also by implementing other resources of an ideological-discursive nature. The use of those referents (and of their frame of reference) not only led to a decrease in noble violence but even to the generation of mechanisms and practices of cooperation between the towns and the nobility. This cooperation tended to satisfy the interests (even if purely opportunistic) of both sides. ; Es bien sabido el carácter generalmente conflictivo de las relaciones políticas nobleza-ciudad en la Castilla del siglo XV. La minoría de Juan II y los continuos episodios de guerra civil que se sucedieron durante los reinados de Juan II y Enrique IV, hasta el triunfo del partido isabelino en 1480, facilitaron una violencia noble encaminada, especialmente, a la apropiación de la justicia y las rentas reales, y a la ocupación de términos urbanos. Sin negar dicha realidad, en este trabajo se analiza el modo en el que la ciudad intentó resolver dicha conflictividad acudiendo no sólo a sus propias medidas de fuerza sino a la implementación de recursos de naturaleza más ideológico-discursiva. El uso de esos referentes (y de su marco referencial) no condujo únicamente a la reducción de la violencia noble sino incluso a la generación de mecanismos y prácticas de cooperación ciudad-nobleza, capaces de satisfacer los intereses (incluso si coyunturales) de ambos actores.

ESPAÑOL: El objetivo de este trabajo es mostrar cómo la identidad política (en nuestro caso, de una ciudad, el concejo de Cuenca en el siglo XV) se construye sobre la base de sistemas compartidos de relaciones (de diversa naturaleza), que conforman una suerte de "campo de juego" común a todos los actores sociales. Un "campo de juego ("Corona de Castilla"), en el que las relaciones político-identitarias (como, por lo demás, cualquier otro tipo de relaciones) han sido objeto de unas construcciones teóricas y unas reglas de operación (de manipulación, correcta e incorrecta, de las reglas de juego y del propio campo de juego) conocidas (y, por lo tanto, y hasta cierto punto, compartidas) por todos los actores. Es en el uso (y abuso) de dichas reglas y en el modo de posicionarse en el campo de juego donde se localizan las diferencias que identifican a los diversos colectivos político-identitarios. Unas diferencias e identificaciones que se enfatizan, asimismo, a través de la operación (manipulación) del sistema de relaciones que une a los diversos actores (colectivos político-identitarios) presentes en el campo de juego. / ENGLISH: The aim of this paper is to show how political identity (in this case the city of Cuenca in the fifteenth century) is built on the basis of shared systems of relationships (of varied nature), shaping a sort of "playing field" common to all social actors. In this "playing field" ("Crown of Castile"), political-identity relationships (as would any other kind of relationships) have been the object of theoretical constructions and a set of operating rules (regarding the use of the rules - correct or incorrect - of the game and the playing field itself) known to (and therefore, to a certain extent, shared by) all social actors. It is in the use (and abuse) of these rules and in the social actors' position on the playing field where the differences identifying the diverse political-identity collectives are located. Differences and identifications that are especially emphasized by the operation (use) of the system of relationships that bind the social actors (political-identity collectives) present on the playing field.

En la Edad Media (quizás habría que añadir que lo mismo que en cualquier otra época), las políticas de comunidad no fueron ni exclusiva ni esencialmente el producto de la acción directa de los dominados sino la respuesta de los dominantes a la discusión de las posiciones privilegiadas de poder que ocupaban. Evidentemente, con esta afirmación no se pretende negar la capacidad de acción de los dominados sino poner de manifiesto la implicación, y las causas de esta implicación, de los dominantes en un marco político de actuación tipo «bien común». Así, abrazar políticas de comunidad o de bien común fue, para los dominantes, una estrategia más en el proceso de consolidación tanto de la dominación en general como de su específica participación en ella. En este trabajo, me centraré en el análisis del modo en el que el corazón de la clase dominante de Cuenca, los regidores, auspició actuaciones políticas de «bien común», transformando así la percepción que de su gestión (política y de poder) podía tener el conjunto de la comunidad. ; In the Middle Ages, community politics were neither the exclusive nor sole product of the subjugated's direct action but the dominants' answer to discussion of the privileged power positions they occupied (in fact, this can be also affirmed of any other period not only of the Middle Ages). Evidently, this statement does not pretend to deny the subjugated's capacity of action but to underline the dominants' involvement, and the causes of this involvement, in a political action framework of the type «common good». Thus, for the dominants embracing community politics or common good politics was another strategy in the process of consolidating both domination itself and their specific participation in it.
