Trade and Development in the World Economy: Methodological Features of Project DYNAMICO
In: Journal of policy modeling: JPMOD ; a social science forum of world issues, Band 4, Heft 1, S. 3-23
ISSN: 0161-8938
A report on methodological features & early applications of the model underlying the DYNAMICO project, developed by the UN to study the interaction between trade & development, with year-by-year calculations for the global economy & the ten regions covered in the model. Each year is represented by a block-angular linear programming problem, where the systemwide (or coupling) constraints represent the world market clearance conditions for nine tradable commodities. Each subblock of relations represents the economy of a given region. G. B. Dantzig's & P. Wolfe's decomposition method ("The Decomposition Algorithm for Linear Programs," Econometrica, 1961, 29, 767-778) is used to solve the system. The specifications of a typical regional subproblem are reviewed, & the solution method is described. Preliminary applications of the system are discussed, with a few sample results provided. 3 Tables, Appendix. Modified HA.
