AbstractLegitimizing a practice is a challenging task because it has to be constantly made understandable and meaningful to prospective users. Garnering such legitimacy is critical for successful practice diffusion and potential institutionalization. The process of theorization—rendering of ideas into understandable and compelling formats—is considered central to legitimacy construction. However, we still have a limited understanding of the specific mechanisms through which theorization happens. In this article, we address this issue by examining the microprocesses through which the practice of Design Thinking (DT) was theorized by its proponents in the field of business management. We undertook qualitative analysis, using grounded theory, of archival data. Our analysis revealed three key microprocesses: appropriation (presenting DT as a solution to abstract field-level problems), assimilation (integrating DT with current vocabularies and legacy practices within user organizations), and adaptation (redefining DT in order to resolve contradictions with legacy practices within organizations). This study makes two contributions. First, to the literature on theorization by explicating key microprocesses underlying theorization and providing a nuanced understanding of how legitimacy and theorization may be linked. Second, to the literature on management knowledge production, by showing how management practices and concepts may be contextualized and interlinked.

How do women's business networks help to advance women's freedom? Drawing on Zerilli's freedom-centred feminism, our study sets out to answer this question at the intersection of freedom, feminism and work. Critics argue that women's business networks promote a postfeminist view of freedom focusing on individual self-realisation and thus participate in rolling back collective, feminist efforts to dismantle structural inequalities. We reconceptualise women's business networks as political arenas and argue that making claims about shared interests and concerns in such an arena constitutes a feminist practice of freedom. With an original, inductive and qualitative research design combining topic modeling and dialectical analysis, we examine the claims made in 1529 posts across four women's business network blogs. We identify postfeminist claims and new forms of change and transformation that can help to advance women's freedom across three 'dialectics of freedom': conformity and imagination; performative care and relational care; sameness and openness. Our findings show that uncertain and contradictory ways of defining and engaging with women's freedom can emerge through claim-making in such arenas. The fragility of the process and its outcomes are, then, what can move feminism forward at work and beyond.
AbstractIn this article, we explore real-time translation work undertaken by frontline healthcare professionals as they interact with marginal tribal communities in Western India. Our 1-year ethnographic study of a healthcare organization delivering obstetric and gynaecological care to tribal communities helps us understand how obstetric counsellors translate allopathic medical expertise across epistemological boundaries to the tribal community they serve, in localized comprehensible forms. We identify four distinct mechanisms of translation work—Interpreting, Annotating, Norming, and Justifying—which differentially deploy and integrate elements of tribal vocabulary, symbols, knowledge, and imaginations of health and body with specific aspects of clinical diagnosis and prescription, making the latter meaningful and actionable in the process. Furthermore, we use configurational approach—Qualitative Comparative Analysis—to investigate how the type of space where the interaction between the counsellors and tribal women patients happens influences the translation work undertaken. We find that counsellors engage in spatially differentiated translation work. They predominantly use justifying and norming in clinical space (hospital); interpreting and annotating in community space (village or school); and interpreting and norming in the overlapping in-between space (outdoor patient department). Our study contributes to translation literature by showing how real-time translation is undertaken in practice, especially in a setting representing high-stakes institutional translation, and how translation work is influenced by the type of space in which interactions happen.
