This paper maps the integration of India's automobile sector in the context of the structural transformation of contemporary capitalism, in particular with reference to what is variously described as Global Commodity Chains, Global Value Chains, Global Supply Chains etc. It explores the multiple dimensions of economic and social upgrading within the Indian auto sector as a consequence of its deepening participation in these 'chains'. The paper is divided into six sections. Section 1 provides a brief introduction; Section 2 gives a brief profile of the Indian automobile sector and also discusses briefly its major constituents, namely, original equipment manufacturers (henceforth OEM) and auto component segment, and their geographical distributions; Section 3 provides an overview of the data and methodology; Section 4 analyses India's GVCs participation, using a couple of indicators, and examines some aspects of economic and social upgrading in both the organised and unorganised sectors; Section 5 flags a few recent policies and plans adopted by India's central government in this industry; Section 6 concludes the chapter with a recap of major findings.

This book presents the findings of research conducted by scholars and activists associated with the Agrarian South Network, based mainly in Africa, Asia and Latina America. The research articulates a Southern perspective on the "new scramble" for Africa, with a view to strengthen tri-continental solidarities. The book explains the significance of the new scramble in terms of the economic structures inherited from the late-nineteenth-century scramble and the subsequent post-independence period. The renewed competition for Africa's land and natural resources and the resumption of economic growth at the turn of the millennium have revived concerns regarding the continent's position in the world economy and the prospects for its development in the twenty-first century. In this regard, the book addresses two related issues: the character of the expansion of Southern competitors in relation to the more established Western strategies; and the impact of the renewed influx of investments in land, minerals, and associated infrastructure. The findings are presented with empirical rigor and conceptual clarity, to enable the reader to grasp what really is at stake in the twenty-first century - an epic struggle to reclaim Africa from the monopolies that exercise control over its land, minerals, labour, and destiny.--

This book brings together renowned scholars from four continents to celebrate the lifelong and seminal contribution of Professor Sam Moyo to the social sciences. The late Prof. Moyo was a Zimbabwean scholar whose intellectual trajectory was part and parcel of the emergence of a critical scholarship from the 1970s onward based in the realities and traditions of Africa and the Third World. His work influenced the global research agenda on diverse issues related to Africa and the South, and especially from the 2000s when he actively defended the importance of research on land and agrarian questions at a time when such issues were being dismissed as passe. He went on to become a leading force in the creation of a South-South dynamic in research collaboration, in defense of the intellectual autonomy and epistemic sovereignty of the South
