In this digital age, as social media is emerging as a central site where information is shared and interpreted, it is essential to study information construction issues on social media sites in order to understand how social reality is constructed and identify the associated power relations that arise. There are plenty of studies taking an information-as-objective point of view, where information quality is treated as objective and can be assessed with objective standards of "truth" or "fact". By contrast, this study emphasizes the constructed and interpretive nature of information and explores the processes through which information surrounding acute events comes into being on micro-blogs. With an attempt to conduct this analysis systematically and theoretically, this study aims to adapt the concept of interpretive communities to the digital media environment. The concept of interpretive communities has been used widely to analyze TV audiences' interpreting activities, but has not yet been applied to microblogs. This research investigates if or not micro-blog based social groups can serve as interpretive communities, and, if so, what role might they play in the construction of information, and the social impacts that may arise. The study adapts standard microblog analysis techniques to empirically investigate users' interpretive practices during critical events. Moreover, in order to understand how this process is entangled with the surrounding social, political, technical contexts, cases from both China (focusing on Sina Weibo) and Australia (focusing on Twitter) will be analysed.

This cross-cultural study investigates the prevalence and impact of climate-related campaigns on TikTok, with a specific focus on climate-related visual storytelling in Indonesia, Japan, Pakistan, the Philippines, Thailand, the United Kingdom, and the United States. Computational methods are employed in the study to analyse a dataset of 7,564 videos, providing insights into prominent visual characteristics and regional variations. The findings underline the significance of cultural and political contexts in shaping climate storytelling on TikTok. Furthermore, this research explores the potential of computational visual data analysis in studying climate communication, demonstrating the integration of computer vision and topic modelling to examine visual styles and communicative functions in TikTok's climate storytelling. The study enhances our understanding of climate communication on digital platforms and emphasizes the value of leveraging computational methods to gain meaningful cross-cultural insights into visual storytelling in the context of climate change.

AbstractWithin the increasingly complex and changeable market environment of new energy vehicles, consumers' attention to product safety has increased significantly, and higher, updated requirements are put forward at the level of product safety. Simultaneously, a product harm crisis, which often entails product recalls, can lead to consumer concerns regarding product specifications and security. Based on the heuristic‐systematic model, this study verified the effect of information processing on the vehicle purchase intention of consumers during crisis situations and conducted an empirical study through questionnaires and structural equation modelling. The data obtained in this study presents the following relationships: (1) risk perception has a significant and positive influence on information search and systematic processing but a negative influence on heuristic processing; (2) heuristic processing and systematic processing have a significant and positive influence on purchase intention; (3) information search has a significant and positive influence on heuristic processing and systematic processing. The study can offer a relevant basis and suggestions for risk communication of new energy vehicle enterprises, thereby fundamentally improving consumer loyalty.

AbstractTikTok, a short‐video app featuring video content typically between 15 and 60 s long, has become immensely popular around the world in the last few years. However, the worldwide popularity of TikTok requires the platform to constantly negotiate with the rules, norms and regulatory frameworks of the regions where it operates. Failure to do so has had significant consequences. For example, for content‐related reasons, the platform has been (temporarily and permanently) banned in several countries, including India, Indonesia and Pakistan. Moreover, its Chinese ownership and popularity among underage users have made the platform subject to heightened scrutiny and criticism. In this paper, we introduce the notion of visibility moderation, defined as the process through which digital platforms manipulate the reach of user‐generated content through algorithmic or regulatory means. We discuss particular measures TikTok implements to shape visibility and issues arising from it. This paper presents findings from interviews with content creators, which takes a user‐centric approach to understand their sense‐making of and negotiation with TikTok's visibility moderation. Findings from this study also highlight concerns that leave these stakeholders feeling confused, frustrated or powerless, which offer important directions for further research.

This article introduces the notion of platformed conspiracism to conceptualize reconfigured forms of conspiracy theory communication as a result of the mutual shaping between platform specificities and emergent user practices. To investigate this relational socio-technological shaping, we propose a conceptual platform-sensitive framework that systematically guides the study of platformed conspiracism. To illustrate the application of the framework, we examine how platformed conspiracism unfolds on BitChute and Gab during the COVID-19 pandemic. Our findings show that both platforms have positioned themselves as technological equivalents to their "mainstream" counterparts, YouTube and Twitter, by offering similar interfaces and features. However, given their specific services, community-based and politically marketed business models, and minimalist approaches to content moderation, both platforms provide conspiracy propagators a fertile refuge through which they can diversify their presence and profit monetarily from their supply of conspiracy theories and active connection with their followers.
