When he was named head of the government, or Taoiseach, in March 2011, Enda Kenny had few illusions: Ireland was on the precipice. A combination of factors - the explosion of the real estate bubble, the credit crisis, the sudden collapse of the financial sector, ballooning public debt, the loss of competitiveness, skyrocketing unemployment and the recession - had delivered a fatal blow to the proud, yet fragile Celtic Tiger. A rescue plan had been deployed a few months earlier under the auspices of the IMF, the European Commission and the European Central Bank. Two years later, after an unprecedented austerity cure, supported by the entire country with courage and determination, Ireland is finally seeing the light at the end of the tunnel. It is also about to take over the revolving presidency of the EU for the next six months. In this interview with Pierre Joannon, Mr. Kenny explains what has been done and what still needs to be done. The stabilization of public finances and structural reforms have borne fruit: for the first time since 2007, the economy is growing once again. Could Ireland be setting an example for Europe? The political landscape of the Irish Republic was radically altered by the parliamentary elections of February 25, 2011. In power since 1997, Fianna Fail, the party of the former Prime Minister Brian Cowen, was soundly beaten, paying the political price for the devastating banking and financial crises which have rocked the country. At the same time -- and for the first time in its history -- Fine Gael became the country's leading party. Its leader, Enda Kenny, is now head of the government and faces the Herculean task of reviving the stricken economy while pushing through a raft of harsh austerity measures aimed at significantly reducing the budget deficit. In this exclusive interview, Mr. Kenny outlines his program: he is determined to get the economy back on track but not at any price. With a strong mandate from the Irish people who have understood the depth of the problem, Mr. Kenny is preparing to lead Ireland toward a newly austere, but probably healthier future.
