This article examines the Cuban response to Ebola in West Africa, specifically in the three countries where the Cuban medical personnel focused their efforts – Guinea, Liberia and Sierra Leone. It analyses the situation in West Africa as the disease rapidly spread, the international response and the Cuban reaction. In particular, it assesses the impact of Cuba's contribution and concludes with some thoughts about what can be learned from this short (6-month) campaign of the Henry Reeve Contingent, which specialises in responding to natural disasters and medical emergencies. The article finds that there are important lessons for the international community regarding responses to future outbreaks. Diseases such as Ebola do not respect international borders and cannot be overcome with promises of resources or money. In this case, Cuba's response – of a highly trained healthcare workforce of doctors, nurses, technicians and others – remains unique.

This article analyses Cuba's medical missions in the South Pacific and specifically in Timor-Leste (East Timor), the largest outside of Latin America. Here, the adaptation of Cuba's low-technology and low-resourced preventive-focused medical model (based on the development of human capital) is used to highlight lessons regarding effective medical cooperation. This article finds that these lessons should be drawn from the dynamic and creative adaptations of the Cuban medical model, which are assisting South Pacific medical systems by scaling up primary care workforces to target previously underserved areas. Thus, the contribution of Cuban medical personnel, bolstered by the education of indigenous South Pacific students (trained by Cuban professors, both in Havana and locally) has developed into unique medical models for South Pacific nations. Such models of cooperation are also clearly adaptable elsewhere.

This article analyses the saga of the alleged 'sonic attacks' directed against US diplomats between 2016 and 2018. It summarises the key developments, and examines the various theories put forward to explain the phenomenon. Analyses by major science- and medicine-based journals are evaluated, and inconsistencies highlighted. The background of troubled US–Cuba relations during the Trump administration is also assessed as a contributing factor to the widespread attention. Finally, some general thoughts on lessons learned from the 'sonic attacks' incidents are offered.

Since 1960, Cuba has been involved in providing medical support to the developing world, and at present has some 40,000 personnel in 74 countries – more than all of the G‐8 countries combined. This article traces the evolution from its first (1960) mission to the current stage. The article also analyses various explanations for this extraordinary mixture of diplomacy and humanitarianism.
