The most important first step, both symbolically and in practical terms, toward restructuring higher education in China following the destructive years of the Cultural Revolution was the re;establishment of the national entrance examination for universities and graduate schools in 1977. While this had the direct effect of improving the quality of students entering universities, no similar quick fix was available for reinvigorating university faculty. As seen in the I following passage, written by a university administrator in Shanghai, the personnel system at Chinese universities in the late 1970s was not conducive to effective teaching or research.

The author describes the wage and benefit system for university teaching faculty in China as well as the process of academic promotion. In addition, by looking at commonly used wage data, he examines the other components that contribute to the total income of university teaching faculty. Since housing is one of the most important benefits provided by Chinese universities, the author looks at the cost, quality, and allocation of university appartments. (DÜI-Sen)

Abstract
To supplement our global assessment of 18 religions in a previous article in this issue of the journal, here we offer analysis of religious affiliation by the globe and six continents: Africa, Asia, Europe, Latin America, Northern America, and Oceania. Estimates of religious affiliation are made for four dates, 1970, 2000, 2023, and projections for 2030. We also contrast growth in two 30-year periods, 1970–2000 and 2000–2030. These global and continental tables are based on country data (World Religion Database). United Nations regional tables (e.g., Western Africa) can also be constructed from the country data.

Abstract
This article represents the results of analysis of data on religion for all of the countries of the world which appear in the World Religion Database (Johnson and Grim 2023). Data was collected at the national level from a number of sources including censuses, surveys, polls, religious communities, scholars, and others. After data collection and analysis, discrepancies were worked out and best estimates are made for each religion across a number of years. Results are presented for religionists and non-religionists as a whole as well as for each religious and non-religious category.
