This article works backwards by contextualizing the metaphorical explosion of metaphor, especially in the last century or so, and works back to Plato and Aristotle, who help us to see the outlines of metaphor in relation to poetics, rhetoric, philosophy and politics, as well as the critical and theoretical issues arising subsequently down to the present age, including the views of Zoltán Kövecses, Northrop Frye, Paul Ricoeur, Hegel, Shakespeare, Thomas Aquinas and others. The nub of the matter is whether metaphor helps us get at the core of philosophy, that is truth, justice and beauty, the good life, or whether it deflects and deludes or both. My argument is that they do both for Plato and even for Aristotle, who is less severe on poetry and on poetic mimesis than is Plato. This friction between actual and fictional worlds might be resolved or at least meet in the possible. ; Este artículo procede retrospectivamente, contextualizando la explosión de estudios sobre la metáfora en la perspectiva de Platón y Aristóteles, de manera que podemos distinguir los contornos de la metáfora en relación con la poética, la retórica, la filosofía y la política, así como las cuestiones críticas y teóricas surgidas en el presente, incluyendo el tratamiento por Zoltán Kövecses, Northrop Frye, Paul Ricoeur, Hegel, Shakespeare, Tomás de Aquino y otros. This book focuses on a close analysis of selected speeches of Winston Churchill in the House of Commons and some of the responses from fellow MPs from the middle of 1940 to the death of Churchill in 1965, speeches in war and peace, and concentrates on foreign affairs. The book will appeal to those interested in Churchill, freedom, tyranny, diplomacy, war and conflict, democracy, politics, the Second World War, the Cold War, Britain, Canada, the United States, the British Empire and Commonwealth, Europe, France, Asia, Germany, Japan, totalitarianism, Parliament, legislative assemblies, rhetoric, language, style, speech-writing, oral and written communication, literature, history and other areas. The debate between autocracy (tyranny, totalitarianism) and democracy is in those times and ours, with many parallels, chilling. Churchill was key to our world history and is a key to understanding what is at stake in the world now.

The Cold War is something I analyze in two parts. First, I examine its politics, including political literatures and cultures large and small that concentrate on central concerns of the Cold War. Second, I discuss small and minor literatures in the period of the Cold War in theory and practice, including examples from the Netherlands and Canada that are in the period of the Cold War but do not focus on it as its primary concern or theme. In these sections, I argue for the centrality of the tension between tyranny and liberty, individual and the group, conformity and nonconformity and related matters. The article ranges in the politics of the Cold War from the background of Marx and Mill though Churchill, Stalin, Truman, McCarthy to Russell, Grant and Ignatieff. In literature, that is the Cold War in ink, the essay analyzes Orwell's essay on the nuclear bomb and his novels, Nineteen Eighty-four and Animal Farm as well as Miller's play, The Crucible and a poem by Einstein on Russell. I concentrate on examples of Dutch fiction and their translation into English and a Canadian novel, The Weekend Man, by Richard B. Wright, because they are an element of "minority literatures." Besides exploring the Cold War, I briefly examine theories of minor or small literatures, including some aspects of the views of Kafka, Deleuze and Guattari.
