An Integrated Systems Model for Preventing Child Sexual Abuse utilizes a public health approach and 'whole of society' philosophy in pursuit of its goal: preventing and responding to child sexual abuse. Following on the heels of Understanding Child Sexual Abuse: Perspectives from the Caribbean (2013, Palgrave Macmillan), which brought to international attention the presence and significance of Caribbean research and theoretical perspectives on child sexual abuse, the present book explores strengths-based approaches and provides new information for empowerment strategies and community participation in preventing child sexual abuse. In pointing to a more systemic approach to the problem, this volume is invaluable reading for activists and professionals from a range of disciplines, especially those in policy, practice and planning positions.

• Summary: This article draws on research with young people affected by immigration controls (Jones, 1998), other studies and relevant literature to examine the conditions and treatment of children and young people who seek asylum in the UK. • Findings: The findings highlight the detention and impoverishment of young asylum seekers and inadequacies in local authority provisions as evidence of discriminatory treatment. The author argues that contradictions between law and policy relating to children and those concerned with immigration control, negative social constructions of 'refugee' and 'immigrant' and the masking of social inequalities in dominant discourses of children's rights are factors which contribute to this situation. • Applications: The focus of current child care policy within the UK is to improve the quality and consistency of services to children in need, to improve outcomes for children looked after (children separated from birth parents) and to eradicate child poverty. The challenge for social work is to extend this concern to children affected by immigration controls. The author suggests that social workers have a major part to play in reclaiming and revisioning children's rights as a more inclusive concept in order to address the impact of structural inequality and discrimination on the achievement of rights. Although arising from work in the UK, the findings are more widely applicable in that the need for harmonization of domestic legislation with international agreements is highlighted and in the appeal for a rights-based approach to social work.

This book sets out an integrated systems model which utilizes a public health approach and 'whole of society' philosophy for preventing and responding to child sexual abuse. It guides those engaged in policy, practice and planning concerning gender based violence and child abuse towards a more systemic approach to tackling these problems.

In development policy, community participation has increasingly come to be seen as a way to encourage community interest, involvement, ownership and ultimately, sustainability of projects. Education has also been affected by this discourse. The following paper examines two countries affected by conflict (Pakistan and Yemen), asking what type of community participation is possible in areas with complex conflict situations, since 'community participation' demands some form of 'democracy'. The conflict scenario and the locus of control and power in these countries is analysed in two rural areas, the North West Frontier Province of Pakistan and Marib Govemate of Yemen. Finally, the paper questions what type and degree of community participation is possible in education and whether it can become a catalyst for peace, or an indirect mechanism for power elites to control decision-making.

The Afghanistan Compact, which the Afghan government signed in 2006, with over 60 nations and international institutions promising to provide the necessary resources and support for achieving a "shared vision of the future" for a "stable and prosperous Afghanistan", is seen in 2007 to have had little impact. The assumption of relative stability upon which the Compact was based has been undercut by insurgency, diverting time and resources. This paper presents an overviwe of the nature of conflict and the arena for reconstruction in Afghanistan. It examines more closely conflict in a northern, "less volatile" region, and discusses three reports from opinion surveys conducted with Afghan people in 2005-2006.
