"This book critically explores the role of state schooling in the reproduction of social class inequalities in the United Kingdom. By uniquely combining critical ethnographic methods with participatory and visual research, it foregrounds the experiences and recollections of working-class adults in relation to their past schooling. Drawing upon her own lived experiences, Jones theorises the experiences of her participants using an analysis of Marxist, Bordieuan, and Freirean frameworks to uncover relations of power and illustrate how schooling has reduced individual agency and sustained lived inequalities. By creating space for a Visual Intervention within Critical Ethnography (VICE) alongside her analysis of class and society, Jones successfully illuminates that working class struggles are not permanent, and that agency can be activated. Interoperability issues arise when utility managers want to use both geographical information systems (GIS) and computer-aided design and drafting (CADD) for asset management. During summer 2003, the author evaluated the interoperability of CADD and GIS using a case study of the complex subsurface utility systems at the National Aeronautics and Space Administration's (NASA) Langley Research Center in Hampton, Virginia. The evaluation included testing the CADD and GIS models and interviewing potential users and developers of the data. The evaluation concluded that the facility's current approach to using spatial data should be modified with the result that the CADD and GIS are considered an integrated and interoperable system: The GIS supports the spatial analysis and the CADD supports the spatial model. Other issues include the choice of software, the accuracy of the spatial model, and various best management practices for spatial model development from legacy data.

As trade and investment become increasingly international and global in nature, there is growing pressure on Canada to keep up with globalization and to facilitate the international movement of skilled business people. Canada's most recent and far-reaching immigration policy, the investor/entrepreneur program, is attracting entrepreneurs from countries such as Hong Kong, South Korea, and Taiwan. Canada had hoped that the new immigrants would provide capital, innovation, and jobs through high-technology firms and businesses. Yet studies show that rather than coinciding with provincial preference for manufacturing and technology businesses, recent entrepreneurs have followed ethnic business strategies resulting in coethnic and service-providing businesses. Fear of financial risk, bank loan refusals, and the familiarity factor all have contributed to entrepreneurial immigrants' business patterns.

Many rural communities lack economies of scale for sanitation infrastructure management and do not receive support from state and federal governments. These problems are particularly severe for Native American Nations, certain rural areas, as well as many developing countries. Geographical information systems (GIS) can improve the management of water and wastewater infrastructure in such areas by using technology to offset the issues of low density, scattered settlements, and large acreages. However, integrating GIS technology into such communities presents technical and organizational challenges. The Tucson office of the Indian Health Services faced such challenges when developing a sanitation GIS for the Tohono O'odham Nation in Southwestern Arizona. The GIS developers found that with adequate management support and communication with potential users, the technical challenges can be met. However, the organizational challenges associated with data sharing and confidentiality slowed the integration of the GIS and may limit the sustainability of the system.

The Hispanic population in the United States is growing and this population experiences health care disparities compared to non-Hispanic Whites. Mexican Americans are the largest sub-group of Hispanics and providing nursing care that is patient-centered and culturally competent is important when caring for this population. Trust is an important component of patient-centered care and culturally competent care as well as a major element , (confianza) in the Hispanic culture. Although nursing researchers have identified the need for trust in culturally competent care with Mexican American patients, none have explored how trust develops between the nurse and the Mexican American patient. The classical grounded theory methodology was used to explore the process of the development of interpersonal trust between the nurse and the hospitalized Mexican American patient. Twenty-two English-speaking Mexican American patients hospitalized at least two days on an obstetric or medical-surgical unit in a hospital in the Midwestern United States were interviewed using a semi-structured interview guide. Through data analysis using constant comparison, a model emerged that explained the development of trust. The core category was Making Me Feel Comfortable and the model had eight categories. These categories reflected stages in the model. The beginning stages of the model included the categories Having Needs and Relying on the Nurse. The middle stages of the model reflecting interaction between the nurse and patient included the categories Coming Across to Me, Taking Care of Me, and Connecting. The final stages were the category Feeling Confianza (Trust) with the outcome categories Confiding in the Nurse and Taking Away the Negative. Of particular importance, anytime there was a negative element while interacting with the nurse during the middle stages, this element halted any further development of trust. Managers of aerospace technology programs and projects are faced with the challenge of making technology portfolio decisions under conditions of limited data, rapidly changing macro level factors and organizational uncertainties. To help make these technology investment decisions, some aerospace managers and analysts have used techniques from the field of decision analysis. In addition, there have been a limited number of research studies of real decision problems. This dissertation presents the results of a non-experimental examination of the use of decision analysis methods for the assessment of aerospace technology portfolios. A web-based survey instrument was developed based on the results of a pilot study conducted using cognitive interviewing techniques. Quantitative data was collected from government and industry aerospace researchers and managers with experience in research and/or with the development of aerospace technology portfolios and the completion of their assessments. Structural equation modeling techniques were used to test the study hypotheses. Conclusions were drawn and recommendations were made for future research.
