This title is available in its entirety in Open Access. Living on the margins of German society, Jews and Muslims in interwar Berlin explored common ground. Based on a number of private archives, the study discusses the contact zones and personal entanglements that arose from their meeting. Readership: All interested in border crossings, the fusing of cultures and traditions, the fertile ground which margins offer, and the shared interests between Jews and Muslims in the 20th Century.

Unter den Muslimen im deutschsprachigen Raum behauptet sich der "Verband der Islamischen Kulturzentren" (VIKZ) als eine bedeutende islamische Strömung sufischer Provenienz. Wie die zugleich geschichts- und gegenwartsbezogene Studie der Religionshistorikerin Gerdien Jonker nachzeichnet, war es zeit ihres Bestehens eine der Stärken dieser Laiengemeinschaft, dass sie sich wechselnden Umständen anzupassen vermochte, ohne ihre religiöse Identität preiszugeben. Die Autorin bezieht Geschichte und Gegenwart kollektiver Gottsuche aufeinander, wie sie etwa in dem von den Gläubigen praktizierten "Ritus der Erinnerung" ihren Ausdruck findet. Ein weiterer Schwerpunkt der Untersuchung liegt auf der brüchigen und wechselvollen Kommunikation des VIKZ mit seinen europäischen Gastgesellschaften. Die sorgfältig recherchierte Studie hat das Potenzial, gängige Vorstellungen über den VIKZ zu ergänzen und zu korrigieren und bietet tiefe Einblicke in die zugleich sehr traditionelle und sehr moderne Form der Religionsausübung seiner Mitglieder.

Abstract
In 1923, Ahmadiyya Anjuman Ishaat ve Islam with headquarters in Lahore (hereafter: Lahore-Ahmadiyya) sent the pedagogue Maulvi Sadr-ud-Din to Berlin commissioned to erect a mosque, create a mission and enter in conversation with the Europeans. The European mission was a comprehensive answer to the challenge that the British Empire presented to Muslims. In their hometown, Lahore, Lahore-Ahmadiyya aimed at comparing religions in order to push back British missionaries and disprove Christian claims to superiority. Adapting to the German setting, which in the years to come would swiftly move from democratic to nationalistic politics, the mission in Berlin created many variations on that theme. Today, the mosque registry, holding records of almost 100 years of administration, bears witness to the efforts of the missionaries to explain to various German audiences their view of Islam. An important source for Muslim history in Germany, the archive highlights such different research subjects as Muslim modernity at work, the language of secular Islam, Indian-German approximations, conversion, and mixed marriage. In 2018, it was donated to the National Archive in Berlin, where the approximately 70,000 documents and 5,000 photographs were made available for research. This contribution offers an analysis of the contents.

Abstract
In this paper, I retrace the history of the Ahmadiyya mission in inter-war Europe as part of the globalisation narrative. Once they gained a footing, missionaries responded and adapted to local experiments with modernity as a means to simultaneously win over Europeans and to modernise Islam. The article first considers the mental map with which Ahmadiyya and other Muslim intellectuals approached Europe. It reconstructs the work of the mission organisation, and illustrates the communication difficulties between the Lahore centre and the mission post in Berlin. Making use of fresh sources, I then sketch out the political context in which the missionaries moved about, and trace their perceptions and adaptations of European ideas. In the larger picture of globalisation, the Berlin mission offers a telling example of local religious adaptation, emphasising the important rapport between the newcomers and the local factor.

This study scrutinizes a case of adaptive globalisation at the interface of colonized India and post-war colonial Europe. It examines Muslim missionaries who, after World War I, made missionary efforts in Germany. Originating from British India, the missionaries' determination was firmly rooted in the Indian colonial past. They saw their mission as a further step in the process of adaptive globalisation, that is, the drive to adapt to and to reverse Western domination.The paper retraces missionary competition in Weimar Berlin, revealing an amalgam of pan-Islamic ideas, political strategies, and reformist religious imagery. These attempts at winning Western converts were a knife that cut both ways: Missionaries approached German 'moderns' in their own symbolic language, while the latter steered between the different mission offers and adapted Islam to their own needs.Making use of fresh sources, the contribution offers three perspectives: (1) the Sunnī mission with its revolutionary tinge; (2) the Ahmadiyya mission, and (3) the interface.

In this article, I explore the dominant narratives about Islam in German history textbooks from the eighteenth century until the present day. I thereby deconstruct a longue durée script with a rather curious pattern. Until the 1980s, textbook narratives about Islam were rooted exclusively in people's historical imagination. Only when the children of Turkish workers entered the classroom did textbook authors try to accommodate knowledge based on real encounters. By addressing the di erent stages of this longue durée script, I enquire into the functions of narratives as they underpinned a German and European "we."

This article discusses the relationship between Europe and ancient Greece as narrated (or ignored) in a range of European history textbooks. It unravels the threads the narrative has followed since the eighteenth century, investigating the choices made in construing the narrative taught today. Which meanings were inherent in the terms "east" and "west" before they acquired the ideological coloring associating "east" with "barbarians" and "west" with the civilized world and "Europe"? The article opens up a new perspective on a complex past that was lost from view when perceptions of the ancient Greeks as guarantors of European values became entwined with the invention of the nation state.
