The study presents a comparative analysis of model standards for project development and explores forward-looking options for voluntary peatland carbon engagement, including through integration into regulated carbon markets, notably the emerging offset market for international aviation ("CORSIA"), and the flexibility instruments enshrined in the Paris Agreement. The study is structured in a context chapter; a detailed comparative assessment of different standards that permit (or may permit) the implementation of peatland projects; in terms of environmental integrity and transaction and market aspects; recommendations for voluntary standards concerning the creation of a model peatland standard and for governments to support voluntary peatland developments; as well as an option assessment for the integration of a model peatland standard into the regulated schemes of the International Organization of Civil Aviation (ICAO) and of the Paris Agreement. Recommendations for peatland standards focus on simplification options within the carbon cycle, implementation methods for small and micro-scale projects, design options that allow project implementation for short- and mid-term durations, and robust instruments to address double counting issues. Recommendations for governments focus on the development of domestic support mechanisms for voluntary carbon project development as well as on the option to create international action groups on peatland and climate engagement, taking existing action groups in other mitigation sectors as a model.
; In Germany, more than 70% of peat soils are used for agriculture. Due to drainage and utilization, these peat soils have considerable environmental impact. Drainage-based use also leads to continuous peat mineralization and subsidence and over time to a loss of productive land. In an expert meeting (16 - 18 June 2016), organized by the MoorDialog project (Greifswald Mire Centre) and the DGMT, representatives from agriculture, water management, research , and nature conservation discussed the 'good professional practice' of agricultural use of peat soils in Germany. The overarching goal should be to secure the availability of productive land. As the management of peat soils also affects the provision of other ecosystem services such as climate and water protection, a good professional practice must consider and balance all these benefits. The expert meeting explored criteria for water management and land management to define good professional practice in societal consensus. Finally, the necessary changes of legal and economic frameworks were discussed. This paper can be the basis for a broad discussion in the political arena.

A major strength of the ecosystem services (ESS) concept is that it allows a succinct description of how human well-being depends on nature, showing that the neglect of such dependencies has negative consequences on human well-being and the economy. As ESS refer to human needs and interests, values are to be considered when dealing with the concept in practice. As a result we argue that in using the concept there is a need to be clear about what different dimensions of value are involved, and be aware of ethical issues that might be associated with the concept. A systematic analysis of the ethical implications associated to the ESS concept is still lacking. We address this deficiency by scrutinising value dimensions associated with the concept, and use this to explore the associated ethical implications. We then highlight how improved transparency in the use of the ESS concept can contribute to using its strengths without succumbing to possible drawbacks arising from ethical problems. These problems concern the dangers that some uses of the concept have in obscuring certain types of value, and in masking unevenness in the distribution of costs and benefits that can arise in the management of ESS.
