This paper reports on a practice-centered study focusing on pilgrimage to explore mobile and digital media dis/connectivity in the context of a particular configuration of personal mobility. Pilgrimage is a practice bringing together people motivated by religion, tourism, leisure, or self-development, in what have been termed "post-secular" forms of pilgrimage and tourism. In 2020 and 2021, restrictions on individual mobility were imposed to contain the spread of the COVID-19 virus. This exploratory study consisted of interviews with 13 pilgrims in Portugal, who went on pilgrimage to Fátima or Santiago de Compostela in 2021. We argue that dis/connection by pilgrims is evidence of a post-digital moment. Our analysis shows how pilgrims maintain an ambivalent relationship with mobile media in light of this experience which limits their access to habitual devices, people, and digital services, while opening up for the use of others that facilitate the mobility and the spiritual, affective, and sensorial experience as a pilgrim. However, digital and mobile media are deeply entangled in pilgrims' relationships with space, time, and others—and thus disconnection is partial and transitional. Moreover, dis/connection is embodied in pilgriming—for example, in how they choose the mobile media considering the weight and energy, and place it on the body, at the same time that mobile media can also afford disembodiment to the experience of pilgrimage—by alleviating the physical pain of walking, for example. Pilgrims also use the media in ways that blur the distinctions between digital and non-digital in the ways they invest meanings in their practices.

Os média alternativos abordam assuntos que não são tratados pelos meios de comunicação tradicionais e dão enfoque a temáticas voltadas à defesa dos direitos humanos. Surgidos no ambiente digital, tiram partido dos baixos custos de distribuição e das potencialidades de participação do público. De forma crescente, os média alternativos utilizam plataformas de crowdfunding ou financiamento coletivo como modelo de manutenção das atividades. Estas plataformas que permitem o patronato não alojam nem publicam conteúdo, mas estão inseridas num ecossistema com outras plataformas que visam obter dados e transformá-los em valor económico. O presente artigo mapeia a forma como média alternativos de Portugal, Espanha e Brasil articulam as plataformas de crowdfunding com as suas estratégias de financiamento, por um lado, e com as plataformas de redes sociais, por outro. O estudo pretende debater as possibilidades e limitações das diferentes plataformas de financiamento coletivo para estes meios. O desenho metodológico inclui entrevistas pessoais, observação online sobre os média alternativos e uma análise de conteúdo sobre o seu financiamento e concretamente as plataformas digitais de financiamento. Os média alternativos articulam o seu uso de plataformas de crowdfunding com as de redes sociais, num trabalho constante de demonstração da relevância do tipo de jornalismo que praticam e do seu contributo social em busca do envolvimento do público enquanto financiador. ; Alternative media appeared in the digital environment, taking advantage of the low distribution costs and the potential for public participation. Increasingly, they use crowdfunding or collective financing platforms as a model for maintaining activities. This article maps how alternative media from Portugal, Spain and Brazil articulate crowdfunding platforms with their financing strategies, on the one hand, and with social media platforms, on the other. The study aims to discuss the possibilities and limitations of the different crowdfunding platforms for these means. The methodological design includes personal interviews, online observation about alternative media and a content analysis about their financing and specifically the digital financing platforms. Alternative media articulate their use of crowdfunding platforms with those of social networks, in a constant work of demonstrating the relevance of the type of journalism they practice and their social contribution in search of public involvement as a funder.

"Once celebrated for connecting people and circulating ideas, social media are facing mounting criticisms about their anticompetitive reach, addictive design, and toxicity to democracy. Known cumulatively as the "techlash," journalists, users, and politicians are asking social media platforms to account for being too big, too engaging, and too unruly. In the age of the techlash, strategies to regulate how platforms operate technically, economically, and legally, are often stacked against individual tactics to manage the effects of social media by disconnecting from them. These disconnection practices-from restricting screen time and detoxing from device use to deleting apps and accounts-often reinforce rather than confront the ways social media organize attention, everyday life, and society. Reckoning with Social Media challenges the prevailing critique of social media that pits small gestures against big changes, that either celebrates personal transformation or champions structural reformation. After facing an intense negative reaction to their accumulation of social, political, and economic power and influence, several tech and social media companies rolled out "digital wellbeing" tools during the second half of 2018. This article examines the technological and discursive construction of "digital wellbeing" as enacted through operating system-based tools (Screen Time and Do Not Disturb— iOS, Digital Wellbeing—Android, My Analytics—Microsoft), and social media platforms application functions (Your Time—Facebook, Time Watched—YouTube, Your Activity—Instagram). While the companies' discourse deploys an imaginary centered around ethics and a normative experience accentuating the willfulness and empowerment of the user, the socio-material analysis of the interfaces and features shows that they envisage simple, familiar, and limited possibilities of disconnecting. Therefore, agency is limited, and the wellbeing outcomes are indeterminate, restricted to quantifying time or controlling the intentionality of connectivity.

This article looks at the social and cultural contexts of children's experiences of illness, through a particular focus on the context of the Global South and the role of the social media platform YouTube in children's culture. It takes a socio-constructivist approach to discuss the case of CarecaTV (BaldTV), a Brazilian YouTube channel with more than one million followers created by Lorena Reginato at the age of 12 when she was recovering from brain cancer. In CarecaTV, cancer subjectivity co-exists with and is expressed through digital commercialization. On the one hand, through this process, Lorena Reginato gains agency as she offers an inspirational and credible first-person testimony about cancer during childhood and becomes an emerging cancer activist. On the other, she uses entrepreneurship strategies associated with the digital influencer model of YouTube to promote herself as a (cancer) micro-celebrity, taking the lead in a youthful and playful culture.

This paper draws upon a qualitative, exploratory study in Austria, Portugal, Denmark and England to argue that the role of digitally mediated ties in parents' social networks is significantly shaped by offline contexts, crucible moments and transitional events in parenting journeys. The paper draws upon qualitative interviews conducted with parents across 16 families, four in each nation, to draw out how parents' abilities to participate in, benefit from, and contribute to online networks – amidst an array of groups, forums and chat groups – is often restrained and shaped by offline factors. Particularly, the paper pays attention to transitional moments – not necessarily formal transitions, but nonetheless key events in parenting journeys which shape the course taken by digitally mediated parent networks, amidst widely uneven contexts of family support systems across the countries in the study.

Neste artigo discutem-se resultados do projeto PubliDiversidade . Após a realização de grupos focais com jovens universitárias/os da área de comunicação, analisaram-se as suas percepções relativamente à dimensão de género na publicidade, enfatizando também as estratégias de auto e hetero-regulação existentes. Concluiu-se pela escassez de perspetivas críticas e de rutura face a representações genderizadas em anúncios publicitários, subtraindo-as a imperativos sociais e de mercado, embora algumas/alguns participantes tenham apresentado discursos que remetem para alguma reflexividade. Neste sentido, o estudo aponta para a necessidade de ampliação de uma literacia publicitária crítica, com previsível impacto na edificação de uma publicidade pautada pela igualdade de género.
