The Santander School of Arts and Crafts was created in 1888 with the goal of providing a specialized workforce to carry out the production processes in the department. Although the school's contribution to the promotion of technical education and to industrial development is important, there are very few historiographical works about its evolution and impact. As such, this paper addresses the historical development of the institution. By applying the historical research method based on a systematic consultation of primary sources and an objective analysis of the information, we determined the material and educational conditions that led to the establishment of the Santander School of Arts and Crafts and identified the operating dynamics with the social, political and productive context of the Department of Santander. We also identify aspects related to the curricula, the educational offer, the pedagogical methods and practices, and their funding sources in their different stages of existence. The foundation of this institute is the first step to study the true social background of this educational proposal ; La Escuela de Artes y Oficios de Santander fue creada en 1888 con el fin de constituir una fuerza laboral especializada para la realización de los procesos de producción en el departamento. Si bien es importante la contribución de la Escuela para el fomento de la educación técnica y el desarrollo de la industria, son pocos los trabajos historiográficos que existen sobre su trasegar y su impacto. De esta manera, el presente artículo realiza un acercamiento al desenvolvimiento histórico de la institución. El siguiente artículo intenta precisar algunos aspectos metodológicos, conceptuales y temáticos que delinearon el desarrollo de la investigación y la ciencia histórica a partir de la segunda mitad del siglo XX, época en la que se tomó conciencia de la necesidad de comprender desde las ciencias sociales todos los ámbitos de la actividad humana y de superar las barreras trazadas por la historia política de corte tradicional. Este movimiento de renovación se concretó en la corriente historiográfica conocida como la historial social, un enfoque que echó mano de las nuevas formas, objetos de estudio, teorías sociales y fuentes de información, replanteando el modo como se investiga el pasado, considerando el estudio de otros actores sociales y de los diferentes fenómenos que implican la vida en comunidad. En la parte final del artículo se reseñan tres investigaciones que ilustran el interés de los historiadores por los "otros" temas que, como la enfermedad o los estereotipos femeninos, llamaron la atención de la historia social. ; The following article tries to specify some methodological, conceptual and thematic aspects that delineated the development of the investigation and the historical science from the second half of the XXth century, epoch in which it became aware of the need to understand from the social sciences all the areas of human activity and to overcome the barriers traced by traditional political history. This movement of renewal materialized in the historiographical current known as the social history, a focus that used the new forms, objects of study, social theories and sources of information, rethinking the way in which the past is investigated, considering the study of other social actors and the different phenomena that involve life in community. In the final part of the article, three investigations are outlined that illustrate the interest of historians for the »other« topics, which, like the disease or female stereotypes, called attention to social history.
