Transformations of Tradition probes how the encounter with colonial modernity conditioned Islamic jurists' conceptualizations of the shari'a. Focusing on the jurisprudential writings of Muhammad Bakhit al-Muti-i (1854-1935), Mufti of Egypt for a time, Junaid Quadri locates a remarkable series of foundational intellectual shifts that throw into doubt the possibility of reading the modern trajectory of Islamic law through the lens of a continuous tradition. Through close readings of complex legal texts and mining archives oft-neglected in the field, this carefully researched study uncovers a shari'a that is neither a medieval holdover nor merely a pragmatic concession to the demands of a new world, but rather is deeply entangled with the epistemological commitments of colonial modernity.

Stakeholders in Indonesia have accepted sustainable tourism as the protection and the long use of tourism resources as well as the availability of the resources for current and the future generation. Although such concept has been recognised as a good notion for developing tourism destination, its implementation needs to be investigated. Since 1970s, Toraja has been promoted as one of the main tourism destinations of Indonesia. For this reason, Toraja was chosen as a location for qualitative fieldwork to investigate the conduct of sustainable tourism. This article provides insights about sustainability and sustainable tourism based on the perspective of indigenous people in Toraja. Participant observations and interviews to stakeholders in South Sulawesi Province, Indonesia (specifically in North Toraja and Toraja land) were utilised to obtain information about sustainable tourism. On the basis of traditional cultural practices, Torajanese believe that the way they practice culture is actually a sustainable way. The idea of sustainability links to sustainability tourism which is now being promoted by the levels of government in Indonesia.

Indonesia is an archipelagic state with considerable potential as tourism destinations, yet that potential has not been fully maximized. This paper aims to examine the opportunity and potential of Gusung Island as tourism resources and propose possible strategies to manage the tourism resources of Gusung Island, Selayar Islands Regency. The research was conducted in July and August 2019 on Gusung Island, Selayar Islands Regency, South Sulawesi Province by applying qualitative research methods. Methods of data collection are through in-depth interviews with the fishing community and their families, direct observation or observation in Gusung Island, and focused discussions held in Benteng City, Selayar Islands Regency. The research reveals that marine tourism and local community activities have a considerable potential to support Gusung Island as a tourism destination. Strategies for community empowerment include educating and facilitating community for hospitality skills, creating tourism packages by involving the tourism industry and the local community, strengthening the working group's role in managing the tourism resources of Gusung Island. Sustainable tourism may be booming if the local community organizations play a pivotal role in facilitating the local community to preserve the environment.

The overall impact of COVID-19 on food security and agricultural food systems was not known in the initial phases of COVID-19. However, during the last five months of unfolding of the diseases in Pakistan, COVID-19's effect on lives and livelihoods, more so for the poor, is gradually turning economic access to food for masses difficult. According to World Bank Group, South Asian countries may face food security challenges both in terms of supply and demand if not properly managed especially for marginalized sections in the society1. Pakistan is no exception to it. Already it is understood that food insecurity as per National Nutrition Survey 2018 is 36%2 – almost matching the poverty numbers (39%)3. These numbers are now set to deteriorate given current circumstances. Although currently, the virus spread in Pakistan seems to be under control, the novelty of this disease has brought uncertainty. Any surge in cases and resultant restriction on mobility may lead to strain the food system in countless ways in the coming weeks and months. All of this will have, and is already having, significant negative effects on food supply chain, which is a complex web of interactions and of actors: inputs, producers, processors, marketers, transporters, storage, consumers, etc.

The discourse of loyalty produces tense predicaments for those living under counterinsurgency regimes. The essay explores this theme by analyzing the case of a Kashmiri woman who found herself in a political drama when she accepted "blood money" from the person accused of causing her husband's death. The woman's decision accompanied moral turmoil in her village, and rumors of her "betrayal" circulated. However, the turmoil threatened to go beyond this localized setting. It brought to fore the fraught implications of "loyalty" shaped by India's occupation in Kashmir, its nationalist staging of Kashmiris as the subversive other, and schisms within Kashmir's historical independence movement. By tracing how rumors of individual betrayal were laced onto narratives of political treason in the case, the essay reveals the counterinsurgency as the operative context of broken intimate and intercommunity relations in which the personal is always at the threshold of becoming intensely public.

The benefits of Maratua Island as tourism attraction should belong to the local community. For this reason, sustainable tourism must be implemented to help community obtain economic benefits and to preserve the natural and cultural resources. This research aims at analysing the implementation of sustainable tourism and proposing recommendations of strategies for sustainable tourism at Maratua Island. This research employs qualitative approach through interviews to the government staff (in tourism board), local community and local leader in Maratua island as well as participant observation in 2017. The research reveals that although the members of community have participated in tourism activity, unsustainable practices by the local community constraint the goal of sustainable tourism. The existence of outsiders (investors) have encouraged the participation of community in tourism. However, the local community should be encouraged to have good job positions rather than as low level worker. This research recommend efforts to achieve sustainable tourism including the importance of socialisation about tourism to community and education and training in creative economy. The government has the role in facilitating such efforts and regulating the investors. Trash boat is considered important in overcoming the issues of environment. In addition, ambassador (duta) of environment and tourism is essential in providing information about tourism and issues on sustainability and sustainable tourism.

This study aims to investigate the current situation of labour workers, who have not yet received any social protection amid COVID-19 pandemic and how they are dealing with the situation.

ABSTRACTThis article considers how anthropology can grapple with white supremacy by conceptualizing it as global and in relation to religion. Drawing on the exchange published as A Rap on Race between anthropologist Margaret Mead and the writer James Baldwin, I address the connection of religion and moral belief to racism, white supremacy, and the critique of racial liberalism. In their conversation, Mead and Baldwin discuss Christianity and white supremacy revealing a complex conjuring of Islam and Muslims that I describe as racecraft. The racialization of religion and the theological components of white supremacy have a particular relevance to the construction of anti‐Muslim racism. To describe how ethnography and anthropological theory can intervene, I offer an example of the study of white supremacy and discuss the implications.
