Data on the radiobiological effects of thermal neutrons are usually obtained from irradiations in a mixed field of neutrons of different energies and gamma rays or from conversion of proton data with similar energies to those created in the neutron capture on nitrogen. Experimental data from irradiations in a pure thermal or cold neutron beam can help to find new values for neutron relative biological effectiveness (RBE) factors, which are useful for BNCT (Boron Neutron Capture Therapy) and radiation protection applications. We present a new experimental setup for radiobiological studies at a cold neutron beam at Institut Laue-Langevin, a beam without fast neutron component and almost no gamma ray contribution. After the irradiation, survival assays are performed to obtain the survival curves. Finally, comparing with a reference photon irradiation, the thermal neutron RBE factors can be calculated. The low-energy structure of 65Fe has been studied by means of γ and fast-timing spectroscopy at the ISOLDE facility, CERN. A level scheme of 65Fe populated following the β-decay of 65Mn was established for the first time. It includes 41 levels and 85 transitions. The excitation energy of the β-decaying isomer in 65Fe has been precisely determined at 393.7(2) keV. The β-delayed neutron emission branch was measured as Pn = 7.9(12)%, which cannot be reconciled with the previously reported value of 21.0(5)%. Four γ rays and four excited states in 64Fe were identified as being populated following the β-n decay. Four lifetimes and five lifetime limits in the subnanosecond range have been measured using the advanced time-delayed βγγ(t) method. The level scheme is compared with shell-model calculations. The β−-particle-emitting erbium-169 is a potential radionuclide toward therapy of metastasized cancer diseases. It can be produced in nuclear research reactors, irradiating isotopically-enriched 168Er2O3. This path, however, is not suitable for receptor-targeted radionuclide therapy, where high specific molar activities are required. In this study, an electromagnetic isotope separation technique was applied after neutron irradiation to boost the specific activity by separating 169Er from 168Er targets. The separation efficiency increased up to 0.5% using resonant laser ionization. A subsequent chemical purification process was developed as well as activity standardization of the radionuclidically pure 169Er. The quality of the 169Er product permitted radiolabeling and pre-clinical studies. 18 pags., 10 figs., 4 tabs. ; The β- decay of Zn81 to the neutron magic N=50 nucleus Ga81, with only three valence protons with respect to Ni78, was investigated. The study was performed at the ISOLDE facility at CERN by means of γ spectroscopy. The Zn81 half-life was determined to be T1/2=290(4) ms while the β-delayed neutron emission probability was measured as Pn=23(4)%. The analysis of the β-gated γ-ray singles and γ-γ coincidences from the decay of Zn81 provides 47 new levels and 70 new transitions in Ga81. The β-n decay of Zn81 was observed and a new decay scheme into the odd-odd Ga80 nucleus was established. The half-lives of the first and second excited states of Ga81 were measured via the fast-timing method using LaBr3(Ce) detectors. The level scheme and transition rates are compared to large-scale shell-model calculations. 12 pags., 8 figs., 1 tab. ; The structure of Ge80 has been investigated at the ISOLDE facility at CERN. A previous study reported for the first time a low-lying 02+ intruder state at 639 keV, based on the coincidence with a previously unobserved 1764-keV γ ray, and suggested it as evidence for shape coexistence in Ge80. We used the β decay from the 3- 22.4-keV state in Ga80 to enhance the population of low-spin states in Ge80, including any excited 0+ level, and γγ coincidences to investigate it. We observed a 1764-keV γ ray in coincidence with strong transitions in Ge80, thus not feeding the proposed 639-keV 02+. No connecting transitions from previously known levels to the 639-keV and 2403-keV 23+ states could be established either. Shell-model calculations for Ge isotopes and N=48 isotones were performed. They succeed to explain most of the experimental levels, but fail to reproduce the presence of a 02+ state below ≈1200 keV in Ge80. The nuclei Cl-41 were produced at ISOLDE by 1.4-GeV proton bombardment of a thick UCx target and mass-separated as molecular ions, XeCl+. Our measured half-life of the 167.1-keV state, T(1/2) = 315(15) ps, is significantly lower than the previously measured value of 410(30) ps. We have also determined T(1/2) = 260(80) ps and T(1/2) ≤ 46 ps for the 515.9- and 1867.7-keV states, respectively. These are the shortest lifetimes measured so far with the ultrafast timing method using the new LaBr3(Ce) crystals for γ-ray detection. ; This work was performed as part of an undergraduate research project (ERW) at the Physics Department of the University of Notre Dame. High purity Sn beams were extracted at the ISOLDE separator using a novel production technique utilizing the molecular SnS+ beams to isolate Sn from contaminating other fission products. Among the new results we have identified the 1/2+ state in Sb-135 and its E2 transition to the lower-lying 5/2+ state was found to be surprisingly collective. To further extend the systematics, the evolution of shapes in the most neutron-rich members of the Z = 56 isotopic chain accessible at present, Ba-148,Ba-150, has been studied via beta decay at the ISOLDE Decay Station. This paper reports on the first measurement of the positive-and negative-parity low-spin excited states of 150Ba and presents an extension of the beta-decay scheme of Cs-148. Employing the fast timing technique, half-lives for the 2(1)(+) level in both nuclei have been determined, resulting in T-1/2 = 1.51(1) ns for Ba-148 and T-1/2 = 3.4(2) ns for Ba-150. The systematics of low-spin states, together with the experimental determination of the B(E2 : 2(+) -> 0(+)) transition probabilities, indicate an increasing collectivity in Ba148-150, towards prolate deformed shapes.
