The ability of personalized addressing & first-class postage to increase response rates over occupant addressing & bulkrate postage was tested by mailing a simple questionaire (3 dichotomous questions about baseball attendance) to 400 R's selected from the Cincinnati telephone directory. Each of 4 treatmentspersonalized addressing/first-class postage, personalized addressing/bulk-rate postage, occupant addressing/first-class postage, & occupant addressing/bulk-rate postage-contained 100 R's, assigned at random. Using postage & addressing as classification bases, the Chi-square statistic suggests insignif diff's in response rates (p= .25). A possible explanation for this result -aside from the trappings of the study, per se-is the preference-for-anonymity factor suggested by Alan Andreasen (see SA 0104/E8145). Whatever the explanation, the often presumed unresponsiveness of 'bulk-rate occupants' is open to question. AA.
