Die stadt- und raumtheoretischen Arbeiten Henri Lefebvres aufgreifend stellt der Verfasser dem Scale-Konzept den Begriff des Niveaus gegenüber. Seiner Einschätzung nach erlaubt der Begriff des Niveaus eine weniger deterministische Analyse der kapitalistischen Realität, wie der Verfasser am Beispiel des für Lefebvre zentralen Niveaus des Städtischen ausführt. Er fasst das Städtische nicht als abgrenzbare Maßstabsebene in einer maßstäblichen Hierarchie, sondern als multiskalaren Vermittler zwischen dem Alltagsleben und der übergreifenden sozialen Ordnung. Aus der Perspektive des Städtischen lassen sich daher nicht nur die Fragmentierungen und Widersprüche der modernen Welt besser begreifen, sondern auch die Möglichkeiten emanzipatorischer Politik offenlegen. Discusses the specifically urban aspects of antiglobalization protest movements through a reinterpretation of Henri Lefebvre's urban Marxism that links it to the work of Antonio Gramsci. Such a rereading, unlike poststructuralist & political-economy treatments of urban Marxism, focuses on hegemony & everyday life. The aim is to offer a metapolitical & metatheoretical orientation rather than a comprehensive "Gramscian-Lefebvrian" urban Marxist model. The significance of everydayness & difference in the proposed orientation allows for a potential new metatheoretical point of departure toward reconceptualizing urban Marxism in response to poststructuralist questions about difference. Nonetheless, this reconceptualization entails dialogue with theorists sympathetic to Lefebvre's dialectical humanism but also concerned with his theoretical inattention to matters of racism, patriarchy, & imperialism. Abstract
This paper establishes a theoretical linkage between Antonio Gramsci and Frantz Fanon. Gramsci's critical-historicist method and its relationship to humanism, his integral understanding of Marxism, and emphasis on the moment of political practice resonate with Fanon's articulation of the subjective and political-economic aspects of the colonial question, his activistic materialism, and his dialectically humanist universalism forged through anti-colonial struggle. Establishing this linkage presupposes engaging distinct currents of postcolonial Gramscianism in relation to each other and to the philological turn in Gramsci scholarship. In turn, a Gramsci–Fanon convergence helps elucidate the specificities of (post-)colonial contexts without elevating these into a civilisational-ontological difference. Emphasising their geographical sensitivity as a meeting point, pushing Gramsci towards Fanon helps us treat the global South and imperial heartlands relationally, in historico-geographical and specifically political terms. A Fanonian Gramsci (or Gramscian Fanon) thus allows us to tackle Eurocentrism without closing doors to a counter- or postcolonial Marxism.
