Xiaomi in the internationalization process: failures and lessons
In: https://hdl.handle.net/10438/30300
Along with the trend of globalization, the rise of the Chinese economy, and the encouraging policies published by the government, more and more Chinese companies started to walk across the border. However, there are always threats behind the opportunities. Xiaomi Technology Co. Ltd, which is conceived as one of the leading innovative tech companies, has achieved outstanding success in the domestic market of the mainland China, occupying the biggest Market share after establishing for 4 years, and obtaining profound influences for the whole telefone industry. Xiaomi started its internationalization process in 2013 and decided to be na international company. In this thesis, an introduction about industry background would be delivered, including how foreign multinationals like Samsung and Apple are influencing Chinese market, and how Chinese telephone companies like TCL, One plus is deciding to explore the oversea market in this situation. Moreover, the international practices of Xiaomi were described, ranging from the trial sales in Hong Kong and Taiwan to the complete launch to Southeast Asia and the Other markets. More importantly, three main problems Xiaomi has been exposed during its internationalization process were studied – The patent crisis, and the unsuccessful sales performance aboard. Xiaomi's international expansion experiences in India and Brazil has been taken as an example to discuss and analyze, though secondary data, the selection of foreign market, the entry mode, the problems and solution of the dilemma that Chinese enterprises faced, aiming at offering a valuable lesson of experience to the other companies which may have the plan to start its internationalization process.

Bending and Fitting: Disciplinarized Institutionalization of Modern Science in China during the 'Treaty Century'
In: Social Sciences: open access journal, Band 6, Heft 4, S. 153
ISSN: 2076-0760
This article investigates how Western science established itself through disciplinarized institutionalization in China as the country entered the modern era, delineating China's science and technology (S&T) enterprises evolving within the social settings primarily decided by Confucianism doctrines including Scholar-bureaucrat virtue. Although the perspective of this study is mainly historical, I also adopt a sociological approach to scientific knowledge production in order to argue that, the socialization of Western science during the 'Treaty Century' (1842–1943) has shaped and channeled the growth of modern S&T as well as its governance in contemporary China in a normative manner. It is this sociological interpretation of the history of modern science in China that sheds new light on our understanding of scientific knowledge as a component element of belief system that crosses countries, social structures, and civilizations. The main findings also include the premises on which the S&T governance issues are explored in China's case, in particular, the increased social mobility at the intrusion of the Western.

PORTRAYALS OF GRANDPARENTS AND GRANDPARENTING STYLES: A CASE STUDY OF FRIEND OF OLD COMRADES
This study employed content analysis to examine the portrayals of grandparents' images and their grandparenting roles in Laotongzhi Zhiyou (Friend of Old Comrades). With a current circulation of 480, 000, Friend of Old Comrades is a national monthly magazine in China whose target audiences include retirees, institutions, and governmental agencies engaged in work and services related to the elderly. Articles (N = 195) that feature grandparent-grandchild interactions were chosen from 156 issues--from 1995 to 2007--of the magazine and were content analyzed to uncover images of grandparents and portrayals of grandparenting roles. Results revealed that grandparents were predominantly portrayed as positive, healthy, and respected. In addition, positive age stereotypes such as Perfect Grandparent, Golden Ager, and Honorable Elder were prevalent with very little negative stereotyping (e.g., Impaired Elder, Despondent) found in the majority of the articles. Results also indicated that over half of the articles featuring grandparents and younger grandchildren depicted grandparents as adopting an involved grandparenting style, playing roles such as caregiver, mentor, playmate, and spoiling grandparent. Findings are discussed in light of cultivation theory and prior research on the media portrayal of intergenerational communication in both Eastern and Western cultural contexts.

The Spillover Effect of US Industrial Subsidies on China's Exports
This study systematically assessed the spillover effects of US industrial subsidy policies on China&rsquo ; s export by matching all related bills issued by the US federal and state governments since 2009 with the affected products exported from China. In general, the US subsidy policies created a significant obstacle for Chinese exporters entering the US market. In addition, the industry-level analysis indicated that the subsidy policy has the most significant negative spillover effect on mid- and high-tech products, and no significant impact on resource-based and low-tech export products. Furthermore, we explored the mechanism and found that the US subsidies lower the domestic export prices of the affected products, thereby having a larger negative impact on the entry of mid- and high-tech products entering the US market. The implementation of the US subsidy increased the export competitiveness of mid- and high-tech products in domestic market, which helped such US firms expand their international markets. Therefore, we offer targeted suggestions in order to create a fair and reasonable business environment for Chinese exporters.

Low-Carbon Behaviour Performance of Scenic Spots in a World Heritage Site
A low-carbon behaviour performance evaluation index system is designed by using a Delphi method in this study. The analytic hierarchy process (AHP) is applied to systematically measure the low-carbon behaviour performance of 32 scenic spots in Zhangjiajie, a world heritage site. The key driving factors that can significantly influence the low-carbon behaviour performance of the scenic spot are extracted by combining redundancy analysis (RDA). The results show that the scenic spots of Zhangjiajie performance well regarding low-carbon behaviour, however, there are still a great deal of room for improvement and promotion. Pressure from investors, the administration committees, tourists and local governments is the main driving factor for the low-carbon behaviour of scenic spot.

An exact non‐iterative sampling procedure for discrete missing data problems
In: Statistica Neerlandica: journal of the Netherlands Society for Statistics and Operations Research, Band 61, Heft 2, S. 232-242
ISSN: 1467-9574
Many statistical problems can be formulated as discrete missing data problems (MDPs). Examples include change‐point problems, capture and recapture models, sample survey with non‐response, zero‐inflated Poisson models, medical screening/diagnostic tests and bioassay. This paper proposes an exact non‐iterative sampling algorithm to obtain independently and identically distributed (i.i.d.) samples from posterior distribution in discrete MDPs. The new algorithm is essentially a conditional sampling, thus completely avoiding problems of convergence and slow convergence in iterative algorithms such as Markov chain Monte Carlo. Different from the general inverse Bayes formulae (IBF) sampler of Tan, Tian and Ng (Statistica Sinica, 13, 2003, 625), the implementation of the new algorithm requires neither the expectation maximization nor the sampling importance resampling algorithms. The key idea is to first utilize the sampling‐wise IBF to derive the conditional distribution of the missing data given the observed data, and then to draw i.i.d. samples from the complete‐data posterior distribution. We first illustrate the method with a performing example and then apply the method to contingency tables with one supplemental margin for an human immunodeficiency virus study.
A Mathematical Epidemiological Model (SEQIJRDS) to Recommend Public Health Interventions Related to COVID-19 in Sri Lanka
Coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) has been causing negative impacts on various sectors in Sri Lanka, as a result of the public health interventions that the government had to implement in order to reduce the spread of the disease. Equivalent work carried out in this context is outdated and close to ideal models. This paper presents a mathematical epidemiological model, called SEQIJRDS, having additional compartments for quarantine and infected people divided into two compartments as diagnosed and non diagnosed, compared to the SEIR model. We have presented the rate equations for the model and the basic reproduction number is derived. This model considers the effect of vaccination, the viral load of the variants, mask use, mobility, contact tracing and quarantine, natural immunity development of the infected people, and immunity waning of the recovered group as key developments of the model. The model has been validated for the COVID-19 pandemic in Sri Lanka by parameter derivation using mathematical formulations with the help of the existing data, the literature, and by model fitting for historical data. We present a comparison of the model projections for hospitalized infected people, the cumulative death count, and the daily death count against the ground truth values and projections of the SEIR and SIR models during the model validation. The validation results show that the proposed SEQIJRDS model's 12-week projection performance is significantly better than both the SEIR and SIR models; the 2-, 6-, 8-, and 10-week projection performance is always better, and the 4-week projection performance is only slightly inferior to other models. Using the proposed SEQIJRDS model, we project mortality under different lockdown procedures, vaccination procedures, quarantine practices, and different mask-use cases. We further project hospital resource usage to understand the best intervention that does not exhaust hospital resources. At the end, based on an understanding of the effect of individual interventions, this ...
