A scale was developed in which citizenship attitudes were operationalized in terms of having a Canadian (as opposed to a provincial or ethnic) identity & having a positive attachment to Canada. Results from a 1991 national survey (N = 3,325 respondents) are drawn on to assess preferences for a particular type of self-identity (Canadian, British-Canadian, French-Candian, Provincial, other ethnic-Canadian, other national), as well as the rated strength of each of these identities. A scale measuring Canadian identity, defined as an attachment to Canada, is also used. Results show that citizenship attitudes in Canada outside Quebec are remarkably positive, with very few differences among respondents from various ethnic origins. In Quebec, a distinctive patterns of attitudes reflecting Quebec nationalism is evident. 1 Table, 11 Figures, 23 References. Adapted from the source document.
