Because of the prevailing patriarchal ideology in Korea, studies of the Uprising in Gwangju have not attributed an active role in the resistance or even autonomous subjectivity to women who took part in the uprising. This article raises & analyzes how the Gwangju Uprising has been genderized & represented in a way that continues this genderization. All too often, women's autonomous subjectivity has been omitted. This article further analyzes women's experiences of resistance in the Gwangju Uprising as well as their experience of being excluded from formal political organizations. We propose a long-term breeding program for Norway spruce and Scots pine in southern Sweden based on a model. presented in a parallel paper. For the establishment of the long-term breeding population we propose three founder populations for Norway spruce. one of Swedish origin. the others from the Carpathian mountain range and White Russia respectively. Only one founder population. Swedish. is proposed for Scots pine but we suggest further exploration of foreign sources. For all founder populations we should like two parallel schemes. One should be based on sub populations consisting of 30 to 40 parents each. the other based on selfed lines. In the first alternative. problems with inbreeding depression are avoided: in the second. we intend to purge detrimental genes by inbreeding. The subpopulations will cover southern Sweden. that is. from the south up to 62o latitude It is suggested that the Institute of Forest Tree Improvement takes care of the long-term breeding populations. We consider the long-term breeding effort to be an important means of managing the country's biological resources. and therefore consider it proper for the government to fund the program.

ObjectiveThis study examines the differing roles of parents in producing bilingualism among second‐generation Asian and Latino Americans, the fastest growing immigrant groups in the United States.MethodsWe employ the probit model to estimate the likelihood of language maintenance for both ethnic groups using the Integrated Public Use Microdata Series (IPUMS) USA of 2005–2014.ResultsThe estimation results show that mothers play a more significant role than fathers, especially for Latino Americans, and that heritage‐language retention increases with the parents' age at arrival. We also find an increase in the rates of language maintenance across generations, presumably resulting from heightened awareness of the need to preserve cultural heritage among younger immigrants in recent decades.ConclusionThese findings highlight the cultural and structural differences in gendered parenting between the two immigrant groups and suggest potential areas of gains through intervention programs for immigrant parents to promote parental investment in their children's development, including bilingualism.

This study examined the relationship of family and friends to the resiliency of older widows. Data from the National Social Life, Health, and Aging Project (NSHAP) survey (Waite et al., 2007), which sampled persons 57-85 years of age (n = 3005), was used. It was hypothesized that older widows have greater breadth and depth of family and friend relationships than older married adults. Multiple regression analysis results revealed that older widows engaged more frequently in family and friend relations compared to older married adults, possibly enabling greater resilience to widowhood.

OBJECTIVE: The COVID-19 pandemic continues to pose significant challenges to nations. The Korean government aimed to mitigate the spread of COVID-19 through stay-at-home strategies and maintaining social distance, which are likely to result in major changes in the lifestyle, mental health, and quality of life of citizens. This study aimed to investigate the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic on these factors in Koreans over 20 years old. METHODS: The study sample consisted of 104 adults in South Korea aged over 20 years. An online survey was conducted between August and October 2020, in which participants were asked to complete the Yonsei Lifestyle Profile to assess lifestyle changes, the Center for Epidemiological Studies-Depression Scale, and the World Health Organization Quality of Life Scale abbreviated version. To investigate the changes in people's lifestyles, depression, and quality of life post COVID-19, descriptive statistics were calculated for these indicators before and after the onset of the pandemic. The p-value was two-sided, and values <0.05, were regarded as statistically significant. RESULTS: There was a significant decline in physical and other meaningful activities, including activities of daily living, leisure, social activity, and education. However, there were no significant changes in nutrition, except in the consumption of carbohydrates and minerals. Participants reported that their quality of life and mental health had decreased after the pandemic struck. CONCLUSIONS: We obtained novel data on the changes in the lifestyle, mental health, and quality of life of South Korean adults before and after the onset of the pandemic. The results of our study may assist health policymakers and practitioners in the development of health education or relevant interventions to deal with the pandemic situation as well as future crises.
