The emerging era of mobile communication transcends the traditional privileging of text and voice to draw upon sensations of augmented reality, especially in terms of the visual domain. Thus one will be able to have new views of the local environment (mobile visual services). In terms of the former, the sense of sight is increasingly being brought to bear on the nexus of physical environment and digital information, yielding literally novel and unprecedented views. This article assesses examples of these services and the way they inter-mix previously separate domains, but also create new layers of monitoring of self and others. In particular, it notes conflicts at the levels of public policy and individual privacy and autonomy.

This paper discusses citizen journalism and related volunteer news co-creation activities in Southeast Asia in order to understand their implications. These implications include, in rising order of abstractness, the operations of news organizations, the ability of governments to influence domestic and international perspectives, the information resources of citizens, and the formulation of public policy. The paper reviews a small number of case studies of citizen journalism activities from across the ASEAN region. The paper then suggests possible reasons why some endeavors were successful and others not. The paper next analyzes the relationship between citizen journalism activities and issues that are critical to the future of the region: freedom of information, human rights, self-determination, certification of professional journalists, democratic participation, security, and cultural harmony. The paper concludes by exploring likely future prospects for citizen journalism as region's social conditions and technological infrastructure rapidly change.

In the few short decades since their commercial deployment, 5 billion peopleùabout three-quarters of all humanity, including childrenùhave become mobile phone users. No communication technology has even approached the mobile phone's wildfire success. Effects of this success are apparent everywhere, ranging from accident scenes and earthquake rescue efforts to demeanor in the classroom and at dinner tables. No one interested in the next generation of issues provoked by the mobile communication revolution will want to miss this important new collection of essays.

The far-seeing collection in this issue is arrayed across the terrain of journalism infused with social media. The authors take deep dives into the material and in the process contribute significantly to the research community's corpus on social media and proprietary platforms in journalism. In their wake, they leave an ambitious albeit hazy roster of research topics. My aim is to offer a brief critique of the articles and conclude with a few hortatory words.

Communication perspectives are presented on the challenges posed to traditional newspapers by social media and citizen journalism, with special reference to the United States. This is an important topic given the critical role investigative reporting, long the domain of newspapers, plays in fostering democratic practices. New Media and social networking technology are evaluated in terms of their impact on the newspaper enterprise. Alternative scenarios for future developments are examined as are the implications for social values and the role of an informed citizenry in democratic society. Strategic management issues are analyzed, and the possibility is considered that social media can fulfil much of the democracy-enhancing role served traditionally by newspapers.
