The role of TV in the increased candidate-orientedness of voters in US presidential elections is examined using data from 8 National Election Studies conducted by the Survey Research Center at the U of Michigan. The importance of candidate personal qualities & traits was estimated using voter responses to open-ended questions about the candidates. Analysis shows that candidate personal qualities became more important for TV-dependent voters who relied on newspapers than for those who relied on TV. The differences did not appear to be a function of the higher level of education of newspaper readers. 2 Tables, 3 Figures, 28 References. AA
