AbstractCurrently, Argentina is experiencing what the government describes as a 'great depression.' Using the 'Great Depressions' methodology developed by Cole and Ohanian (1999) and Kehoe and Prescott (2002), we find that the primary determinants of both the boom in Argentina in the 1990s and the subsequent depression were changes in productivity, rather than changes in factor inputs. The timing of events links the boom to the currency‐board‐like Convertibility Plan and the crisis to its collapse. To gain credibility, the Argentine government took measures to make abandoning the plan more costly. Because the government was unable to enforce fiscal discipline, however, these increased costs failed to make the plan more credible and instead made the crisis far worse when it failed.

En 1950 México entró en un periodo de despegue económico y creció rápidamente durante más de 30 años. El crecimiento se detuvo durante las crisis de 1982-1995, a pesar de importantes reformas, incluyendo la liberación del comercio exterior y la inversión extranjera. Desde entonces, el crecimiento ha sido modesto. Analizamos la historia económica de México desde 1877 hasta 2010. Concluimos que el crecimiento en el periodo 1950-1981 estuvo impulsado por la urbanización, la industrialización y la educación, y que México habría crecido incluso a un ritmo más acelerado si el comercio y la inversión se hubieran liberado antes. Si México pretende reanudar su rápido crecimiento —de manera que pueda acercarse a los niveles de ingreso de los Estados Unidos— necesita aún más reformas.

Modeling North American Economic Integration presents descriptions of the models and the central results obtained by four teams of economic modelers who analyze the impact of the North American Free Trade Agreement (NAFTA) on the economies of Canada, Mexico and the USA. Preliminary versions of these four modeling efforts were presented at a conference with the same title as the book, held in March 1991 at the Federal Reserve Bank of Minneapolis and sponsored by El Colegio de Mexico and the Institute for Empirical Macroeconomics. The book also includes a Foreword by Jaime Serra-Puche, the former Secretary of Trade and Industrial Development in Mexico and that country's chief negotiator of NAFTA, plus two essays by the editors. The first provides an overview and discussion of the results obtained by the modeling groups, and the second provides a critical survey of the sort of applied general equilibrium model employed by these groups. A final chapter discusses the results of the models in relation to the 1994-95 financial crisis in Mexico
