Documents include the Background for Interpretation of the Hopi Constitution by Dr. Edward A. Kennard and correspondence between Richard W. Petherbridge and the Bureau of Indian Affairs on the details and voting results of the adaption of the Constitution and By-Laws of the Hopi Tribe. The document written by Dr. Kennard covers the foundations of Hopi beliefs, the organization of leadership in the Hopi tribe, the powers of the Hopi Tribal Council, land rights including farming and grazing, and pacifism as practiced by the Hopi. BIOGRAPHICAL NOTE: The Ammon Hennacy Associates were Quaker activists Virginia Anderson and George Yamada who in the 1950s wrote letters on behalf of the Hopi to United States Government leaders from the BIA to the Justice Department. Anderson was an Arizona State University Instructor in Social Work and Psychology and George Yamada, was a World War II draft resister.
