Aufgrund ihrer hohen internen Validität werden Experimente vielfach als Goldstandard wissenschaftlicher Forschung bezeichnet. Die Probleme von sozialwissenschaftlichen Experimenten werden dagegen häufig in der ungeklärten Übertragbarkeit ihrer Ergebnisse auf die "reale Welt" gesehen. Nicht zuletzt aufgrund ihrer strittigen externen Validität stößt die experimentelle Methode bis heute vor allem in der Soziologie auf gehörigen Gegenwind.Dieser Sonderband liefert gute Gründe für die Durchführung von Experimenten und zeigt dabei nicht nur die breiten Anwendungsmöglichkeiten in einer Vielzahl sogenannter Bindestrichsoziologien auf, sondern systematisiert dringend notwendige Methodenforschung zum Einsatz von Labor-, Feld-, Vignetten- und natürlichen Experimenten. Konzentration der Nachfrage erzeugt in einigen Märkten extreme Erfolgsungleichheiten, dazu zählen insbesondere Kulturmärkte. Marc Keuschnigg untersucht Konsumentenverhalten im Buchmarkt und führt extreme Marktergebnisse mit vielen Misserfolgen und einigen Bestsellern auf Konformität unter Käufern zurück. Die präsentierten Erklärungsmodelle und deren empirische Prüfung erlauben Rückschlüsse auf die Entstehungsweise von Bestsellern und geben Hinweise auf Entscheidungshilfen, die von Konsumenten in einem Umfeld geringer Markttransparenz genutzt werden. Der Autor trägt zum Verständnis der Konsequenzen von Informationsasymmetrien für Marktergebnisse bei und bezieht sich dabei nicht allein auf Nachfrageprozesse im Buchmarkt.

This case adds to the discussion on the effectiveness of laboratory experiments in sociological research. Sociologists often question laboratory experiments' external validity and particularly criticize the neglect of context effects in experimental designs. Bringing context into social lab experiments is of prior importance for sociological research. Our case addresses this criticism and practically guides through the 10 steps necessary to successfully conduct a sociological lab experiment, using the example of a project on cooperative behavior undertaken in Mangalore, India. Our exemplary research focuses on cooperation in a culturally heterogeneous environment and the testing of specific hypotheses regarding the functionality of leadership. Inviting both Hindu and Muslim participants into the lab, we used religious affiliation as a salient marker of cultural dissimilarities. We measured cooperative behavior with the Public Goods Game (PGG) and found that cultural diversity does not affect cooperation per se, but reduces cooperation in the presence of a first-moving leader. In heterogeneous groups, poor leadership and uncertainty about followers' reciprocity hinder the effectiveness of leadership as an institutional device to resolve social dilemmas. We also discuss more general issues of experimental research in the social sciences, including the overrepresentation of positive findings in the published literature (publication bias) and the tailoring of narratives based on particular findings in the data (overfitting). To resolve these critical issues, we stress the value of cumulative knowledge obtainable through replication and comprehensive meta-studies which add considerable value to stand-alone experiments in sociology and the social sciences in general.

According to the "low-cost hypothesis" (LCH), attitudes explain behavior only if complying with personal convictions requires little effort. Environmental research has seized this argument to explain moderate participation in pro-environmental action against a backdrop of rising environmental awareness. However, evidence for the LCH remains ambiguous, and recent studies have reported contradictory results. Here, we reconcile prior findings on household waste recycling and argue that many environmental behaviors evolved into every day, "normal" practices increasingly encouraged by social norms, and thus slip out of the LCH's scope. We combine a natural experiment exploiting households' variation in geocoded walking distances to drop-off recycling sites in Munich, Germany ( N = 754) with an independent online survey ( N = 640) measuring local intensities of recycling norms for two distinct waste categories, plastics and glass. Our results suggest that normative change narrows the LCH's scope to include only environmental action for which normative expectations are weak.

Abstract
This paper discusses social mechanisms of discrimination and reviews existing field experimental designs for their identification. We first explicate two social mechanisms proposed in the literature, animus-driven and statistical discrimination, to explain differential treatment based on ascriptive characteristics. We then present common approaches to study discrimination based on observational data and laboratory experiments, discuss their strengths and weaknesses, and elaborate why unobtrusive field experiments are a promising complement. However, apart from specific methodological challenges, well-established experimental designs fail to identify the mechanisms of discrimination. Consequently, we introduce a rapidly growing strand of research which actively intervenes in market activities varying costs and information for potential perpetrators to identify causal pathways of discrimination. We end with a summary of lessons learned and a discussion of challenges that lie ahead.

Superlinear growth in cities has been explained as an emergent consequence of increased social interactions in dense urban environments. Using geocoded microdata from Swedish population registers, we remove population composition effects from the scaling relation of wage income to test how much of the previously reported superlinear scaling is truly attributable to increased social interconnectivity in cities. The Swedish data confirm the previously reported scaling relations on the aggregate level, but they provide better information on the micromechanisms responsible for them. We find that the standard interpretation of urban scaling is incomplete as social interactions only explain about half of the scaling parameter of wage income and that scaling relations substantively reflect differences in cities sociodemographic composition. Those differences are generated by selective migration of highly productive individuals into larger cities.
