Since the normalization of Sino-Korean diplomatic relations in 1992, many South Koreans have moved to China for business, education, and other purposes. There they have encountered Korean-Chinese; ethnic Koreans who have lived in China for decades. This has lead to 'intra-ethnic conflict' which has divided Korean communities

; This dissertation aims to improve the use of scenario-based biodiversity information in conservation policy and practice. First, I explore the impact of climate change and land use on biodiversity and ecosystem services through a model intercomparison. Then, I co-develop and describe a new scenario framework "Nature Futures Framework" with its methodological guide for modeling Nature Futures scenarios. Finally, I conduct a retrospective analysis on protected areas through the Nature Futures lens using essential variables. This dissertation proposes bringing climate and biodiversity research communities together in developing sustainability scenarios. It promotes integrating diverse values and worldviews in new scenarios to engage broader societal stakeholders in achieving sustainable futures. It suggests interweaving scientific and policy frameworks in implementing conservation and sustainability goals.
AbstractThis study investigates the size of the initial wage disadvantage and the patterns of subsequent labor-market assimilation for immigrant workers in South Korea. We find that immigrants to Korea earn 17–29 percent less upon arrival than natives with similar characteristics, and the wage gap diminishes by 1.55 percent per year spent in the country. The patterns of assimilation differ by both gender and country of origin. Males and Asian immigrants generally follow the patterns of all foreign workers. However, females experience a smaller initial wage difference and no convergence, while immigrants from non-Asian countries and Japan initially earn higher wages than natives, but they then experience a relative decline in wages over time. The results of our out-migration analysis suggest that the negative assimilation of non-Asian and Japanese immigrants may be due to positively selected out-migration.
Southeast Asia's significance to the Korean peninsula is growing. South Korea has deepening trade, investment and assistance relationships in the region, while ASEAN's non-judgmental approach to diplomacy is useful in dealing with Pyongyang. Beyond hosting summits between American and North Korean leaders, Southeast Asia is in a position to mediate North Korea's greater international engagement and to assist in the acceleration of interaction between the North and the South.
The study attempts to understand corporations' efforts to communicate their values and commitment to stakeholders after a crisis. Specifically, the study explores the characteristics of communication efforts that may differ depending on the reputational crisis types: corporate ability (CA) and corporate social responsibility (CSR) crises. Employing a series of semantic network analyses, the study examined the sustainability annual reports of two Korean airlines (i.e., Korean Air and Asiana Airlines) published before and after their recent crises. Results showed how sustainability reports' central keywords, social issues the companies support, and prioritized stakeholders varied in response to the different types of crises. Word frequency results showed that there was an increasing trend in emphasizing the word "safety" after both types of crisis, while a noticeable decrease in emphasis on the word "ethics" was observed after CA crisis. The results of semantic network analyses showed that Korean Air's sustainability reports seemed to focus more on aspects of the relationship with stakeholders after the CSR crisis, while Asiana Airlines appeared to place more emphasis on business-related notions after the CA crisis. Theoretical and practical implications are discussed.
