The aim of this study is researching the interaction between Russian constructivist graphic image and the East Asian typography, particularly Korean typography which has different features, compared to Western letters. For this purpose, graphic design that appeared in media such as newspapers, magazines and books during the 1920-30s in Korea is investigated. This study aims to capture aspects of localization in trademark design during the so called "cultural rule" period (1920-1937) in colonial Korea. While conducting case studies of corporate and merchandise trademarks, it also pays attention to political, social and economic conditions, as the shift of policy by the colonial government in 1920 led to the expansion of media, commerce and advertising, resulting in the rise of modern consumerism in Korea. In trademark design, a "Korean transformation" was observed. National icons were adopted to emphasize the origin of Korean products and companies, original forms of symbolization were sought as counterparts to the Japanese family crest style, and the use of hangeul (Korean characters) expanded. The aim of this study is to research the local government-led identity design by analyzing the official characters of the municipalities. After the autonomous local government system launched in 1990's, each region started to establish a CI (Community Identity) including regional character in order to promote themselves. The competition between governments was so overheated that in about 7 short years, a majority of the municipalities established CIs. The regional characters look very similar to each other in several aspects. And it is apparent that there is a stereotype. Many of them were designed by KIDP (Korea Institute of Design Promotion) and some design companies that are registered with the Institute. The CIs were created and established hastily in a competitive manner without enough deliberation, and discussion by only a handful of companies. Background Terminalia chebula Retz. (Combretaceae) is a traditional herbal medicine that is widely used in the treatment of diabetes, immunodeficiency diseases, and stomach ulcer in Asia. However, the anti-amnesic effect of T. chebula has not yet been investigated. The present study was designed to determine whether T. chebula extract (TCE) alleviates amnesia induced by scopolamine in mice. We also investigated possible mechanisms associated with cholinergic system and anti-oxidant effects. Methods TCE (100 or 200 mg/kg) was orally administered to mice for fourteen days (days 1–14), and scopolamine was intraperitoneally injected to induce memory impairment for seven days (days 8–14). Learning and memory status were evaluated using the Morris water maze. Hippocampal levels of acetylcholine (ACh), acetylcholinesterase (AChE) and choline acetyltransferase (ChAT) were measured ex vivo. Levels of reactive oxygen species (ROS), nitric oxide (NO), and malondialdehyde (MDA) in the hippocampus were also examined. Results In the Morris water maze task, TCE treatment reversed scopolamine-induced learning and memory deficits in acquisition and retention. TCE reduced hippocampal AChE activities and increased ChAT and ACh levels in the scopolamine-induced model. Moreover, TCE treatment suppressed scopolamine-induced oxidative damage by ameliorating the increased levels of ROS, NO, and MDA. Conclusion These findings suggest that TCE exerts potent anti-amnesic effects via cholinergic modulation and anti-oxidant activity, thus providing evidence for its potential as a cognitive enhancer for amnesia. ; This work was financially supported by grants from the National Research Council of Science and Technology (NST) by the Korean government (MSIP) (CRC-15-04-KIST, G15120, G16230, K16850 and K17850).

Background : The increasing trend of antibiotic resistance requires effective second-line Helicobacter pylori (H. pylori) treatment in high prevalence area of H. pylori. The aim of our study was to evaluate the reinfection rate of H. pylori after second-line treatment that would determine the long-term follow up effect of the rescue therapy. Methods : A total of 648 patients who had failed previous H. pylori eradication on standard triple therapy were randomized into two regimens: 1, esomeprazole (20 mg b.i.d), tripotassium dicitrate bismuthate (300 mg q.i.d), metronidazole (500 mg t.i.d), and tetracycline (500 mg q.i.d) (EBMT) or 2, moxifloxacin (400 mg q.d.), esomeprazole (20 mg b.i.d), and amoxicillin (1000 mg b.i.d.) (MEA). At four weeks after completion of eradication therapy, H. pylori tests were performed with 13C urea breath test or invasive tests. In patients who maintained continuous H. pylori negativity for the first year after eradication therapy, H. pylori status was assessed every year. For the evaluation of risk factors of reinfection, gender, age, clinical diagnosis, histological atrophic gastritis or intestinal metaplasia were analyzed. Results : The recrudescence rate of the EBMT was 1.7% and of the MEA group 3.3% (p = 0.67). The annual reinfection rate of H. pylori of EBMT was found to be 4.45% and the MEA group 6.46%. Univariate analysis (Log-rank test) showed no association with any clinical risk factor for reinfection. Conclusions : The long-term reinfection rate of H. pylori stayed low in both of bismuth-containing quadruple therapy and moxifloxacin-based triple therapy; thus reinfection cannot affect the choice of second-line treatment.
