PurposeThe purpose of this paper is to present an empirical investigation of recent trends and changes in companies' production relocation and backshoring behaviour against the background of the global economic crisis.Design/methodology/approachThe empirical research is based on a large data set of 1,484 German manufacturing companies as part of the European Manufacturing Survey (EMS). The paper employs a structured set of probit analyses to identify the differences of production relocation and backshoring determinants before and within the crisis.FindingsAgainst common belief the paper finds that not only the relocation of production to emerging countries, but also thebackshoringof once offshored manufacturing capacities to the home base is a relevant phenomenon. Since the emergence of the global economic crisis, relocation activities declined significantly, whereas the level of backshoring activities has remained stable. Far‐shore destinations in Asia gain in attractiveness over near‐shore locations in Eastern Europe. Particularly export‐intensive companies tended recently towards (re‐)concentrating of their production capacities, trying to exploit the benefits of higher capacity utilisation and a superior relation of variable costs to fix costs at their existing locations.Research limitations/implicationsAlthough covering a significant range of industrial sectors in Germany, more empirical evidence is needed from other branches and countries. Looking forward it is proposed to systemically integrate scenarios on the future development of the most influential environmental factors in future research frameworks for global production decisions and value chains.Practical implicationsThe findings strongly recommend a revision of established decision‐making schemes for production relocations based on pure cost efficiency considerations. Decision‐making should integrate qualitative environmental factors and dynamic considerations using scenario‐based tools. Companies need to understand and prepare for dynamic developments at different locations which can strategically necessitate backshoring after a certain time.Originality/valueThe research considerably widens the empirical knowledge on recent trends in relocation activities and their inherent risks, which in a dynamic perspective are sometimes forcing backshoring activities.

Automobilzulieferer agieren bei Auslandsproduktionsstrategien besonders dynamisch. Die Autoren analysieren Zukunftstrends, Erfolgsmuster und Entscheidungsfaktoren. Nicht alle Betriebe werden in gleichem Maße mit Kundenanforderungen, auf die sie flexibel reagieren müssen, konfrontiert. Analysen zeigen fünf Betriebstypen zwischen Flexibilität und Stabilität. Ein erster Typ setzt auf Variantenflexibilität und interne Flexibilitätsbefähiger und zeichnet sich bei der Innovationsfähigkeit durch ein gutes Input-Output-Verhältnis aus. Ein zweiter Typ erzielt mit einer hohen Wertschöpfungstiefe und FuEIntensität einen überdurchschnittlichen Innovationsoutput und wirtschaftlichen Erfolg. Ein dritter Typ setzt unter Kostendruck vorrangig auf effiziente Prozesse und steuert die Flexibilität extern. Ein vierter Typ nutzt sowohl interne wie auch externe Flexibilitätsbefähiger unterdurchschnittlich und sichert sich eine stabile Gewinnlage durch stabile Qualitätsperformanz. Auf Differenzierung in der Nische setzt der fünfte Betriebstyp. Die Intensität und das Erfolgspotenzial verschiedener interner und externer Stellhebel zur Sicherung der notwendigen Flexibilität und Stabilität sind demnach immer vor dem Hintergrund der spezifischen Besonderheiten zu reflektieren. Im BMBF-Vorhaben VITNESS wird ein modulares Gesamtkonzept personalpolitischer Instrumente entwickelt, das eine individuelle Balance von Flexibilitäts- und Stabilitätsanforderungen erlaubt.

"Die volkswirtschaftliche Bedeutung der Automobilzulieferer in Deutschland liegt mit rund 990.000 Beschäftigten um den Faktor drei höher, als dies die bislang verfügbaren statistischen Zahlen ausweisen. Aufgrund des zunehmenden Globalisierungsdrucks, der auch viele kleine und mittlere Automobilzulieferer trifft, sind strategisch fundierte und zukunftsorientierte Entscheidungsprozesse über Produktionsstandorte außerordentlich wichtig. Vor diesem Hintergrund analysiert der Beitrag, welche typischen internationalen Produktions- und Standortstrategien deutsche Automobilzulieferer verfolgen, welche zentralen Entscheidungsfaktoren sie dabei heranziehen und wie besonders Erfolg versprechende Strategien aussehen. Zugleich wird herausgearbeitet, welche Defizite der Prozess der Standortentscheidungsfindung vielfach aufweist. Darauf aufbauend werden Methoden für strategisch fundierte und zukunftsorientierte Standortbewertungen bei Automobilzulieferfirmen skizziert. Sie sollen sowohl die Unternehmensführung wie auch Betriebsräte befähigen, Standortentscheidungen zu treffen bzw. nachvollziehen zu können, die mittel- bis langfristig tragfähige Lösungen versprechen." Die verstärkte Nutzung regionaler Potenziale soll gerade im Zeitalter der Globalisierung insbesondere kleine und mittlerer Unternehmen in die Lage versetzen, im Wettbewerb zu bestehen. Doch obwohl viele politische Initiativen darauf abzielen, regionale zu initiieren, kooperiert momentan lediglich ein Drittel aller Unternehmen in der Investitionsgüterindustrie mit regionalen Partnerfirmen. In den neunen Bundesländern ist die Kooperationsneigung deutlich ausgeprägter als im Westen. In den alten und neuen Ländern sind regionale Kooperationen bislang eher Ausdruck der Schwäche, als dass auch in guten Ertragssituationen gezielt als Instrument genutzt würden.

Die industrielle Mensch-Roboter-Interaktion (MRI) eignet sich nach Einschätzung von Experten vor allem für die spezifischen Produktionsbedingungen kleiner und mittlerer Unternehmen (KMU). Nichtsdestotrotz finden sich MRI-Lösungen derzeit vorwiegend in Großunternehmen. Eine empirische Befragung von 81 Vertretern deutscher Industrieunternehmen legt die Vermutung nahe, dass es sich hierbei nicht nur um ein Umsetzungsdefizit handelt. Vielmehr scheinen KMU die Potenziale von MRI-Lösungen systematisch zu unterschätzen.
 
According to experts, industrial human-robot interaction (HRI) is particularly suitable for the specific production conditions of small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs). Nevertheless, HRI solutions are currently mainly found in large companies. An empirical survey of 81 representatives of German industrial companies suggests that this is not just due to barriers in implementing collaborative robots. On the contrary, SMEs seem to systematically underestimate the potential of HRI solutions.

PurposeThe purpose of this paper is to present an empirical investigation of firm level productivity effects of outsourcing against the background of a review of recent theoretical considerations about the topic.Design/methodology/approachThe empirical research is based on a large representative data set from the German manufacturing industries containing detailed data about almost 500 establishments. It investigates productivity effects of outsourcing under control of other relevant factors influencing firm level productivity by means of a multivariate regression analysis.FindingsIn sharp contrast to common belief and prevailing management practices, outsourcing, i.e. the extent to which the vertical range of manufacturing is reduced, has a strong negative impact on a firm's labour productivity. Against the background of the theoretical considerations reviewed from the literature, this result can be explained such that mere cost‐efficiency comparisons are insufficient for appropriate decisions on vertical manufacturing range as the effects of opportunism, of disturbed competence formation, and of limited innovative value creation processes may be overcompensating cost benefits.Research limitations/implicationsThe investigation focuses on productivity effects of outsourcing as a relevant long‐term performance measure not regarding other firm level performance indicators. Although covering a significant range of industrial sectors in Germany, more empirical evidence is needed from other sectors and regions. Moreover, performance effects of different types of outsourcing implementations (e.g. simple part supply versus outsourcing of whole business processes including design, production, and marketing) should be investigated as they might have different impacts.Practical implicationsThe findings strongly recommend a revision of established decision‐making schemes for vertical manufacturing range based on cost‐efficiency considerations. Decision making should instead integrate cost efficiency and transaction cost analysis with the competence and innovation capability formation perspectives. Procedural schemes for this integrated view are still to be developed, however.Originality/valueThe research described in this paper considerably widens the empirical knowledge about productivity effects of outsourcing and has strong impact on management practice.
