The present paper deals with the polemics concerning the importance of the humanities in Lithua­nia. The arguments provided by the critics – natural scientists, politicians, businessmen, and general public opinion – are reconstructed from the humanities perspective, i.e. from the texts where humanitarians try to respond to them. The arguments for the value of the humanities, formed by prominent scholars Darius Kuolys, Alvydas Jokubaitis, and Viktorija Daujotytė are also presented. The paper argues that this debate is essentially a clash of two axiological positions. The critics of the humanities occupy the position of axiological collec­tivism and claim that the humanities must provide a measurable impact on human communities – a nation, society, or business corporation. Humanitarians, in their turn, adopt the perspective of axiological holism and argue the value of the humanities for the nation or the state as entities exceeding the sum of their parts. The paper suggests that the turn toward axiological individualism might be a way to escape the deadlock that these polemics have reached. The title of this article paraphrases two lines of the Lithuanian National Anthem.

Iš humanitarų pozicijų jame rekonstruojamos jų kritikų – gamtamokslininkų, politikų, verslininkų ir visuomenės nuomonės – pozicijos. Taip pat pristatomi svarbiausi politiniai ir kultūriniai argumentai už humanitarinių mokslų vertę, suformuluoti Dariaus Kuolio, Alvydo Jokubaičio, Viktorijos Daujotytės. Straipsnyje tvirtinama, kad debatai dėl humanitarinių mokslų reikšmės iš esmės yra dviejų aksiologinių pozicijų susidūrimas. Humanitarų kritikai išpažįsta aksiologinį kolektyvizmą ir reikalauja iš humanitarų išmatuojamo poveikio visų pirma žmonių bendrijoms – tautai, visuomenei ar verslo korporacijai. Savo ruožtu humanitarai savo vertę grindžia aksiologiniu holizmu – humanitarų verte tautai ar valstybei kaip visumai. Diskusijos analizėje siūloma atsigręžti į aksiologinį individualizmą, kaip galimą kelią iš aklavietės, kurioje ši polemika yra atsidūrusi.

Straipsnyje nagrinėjama kritinių socialinių mokslų samprata ir jų vieta platesnėse metodologinėse šiuolaikinės socialinių mokslų filosofijos diskusijose (ypač diskusijose dėl natūralizmo). Analizuojami du pamatiniai kritinių socialinių mokslų bruožai – metodologinis antinatūralizmas ir kritinė vertybinė nuostata. Straipsnyje tvirtinama, jog kritinė vertybinė nuostata numato itin siaurą vertybių sampratą (suprantant vertybes kaip nuostatas, nurodančias tyrimo tikslus), kurios laikydamiesi kritinių socialinių mokslų filosofai nepajėgia įrodyti būtino ryšio tarp kritinės vertybinės pozicijos ir konkrečios metodologinės pozicijos. Todėl kritinę vertybinę nuostatą įmanoma sieti tiek su natūralistine, tiek su interpretacine metodologija.Pagrindiniai žodžiai: kritiniai socialiniai mokslai, natūralizmas, interpretacinė prieiga, vertybinis neutralumas socialiniuose moksluose.Are Critical Naturalist Social Sciences Possible?Kęstas KirtiklisSummaryThe article deals with the conception of critical social sciences and their place in the wider context of methodological debates, particularly in the naturalism debate in contemporary philosophy of social sciences. The article analyzes two basic characteristics of critical social sciences – methodological antinaturalism and critical axiological position. It is argued that because of excessively narrow notion of values (values as research-directing attitudes) implied by the critical axiological position philosophers of critical social sciences fail to demonstrate a necessary link between critical axiological attitude and particular methodology. Therefore, it is possible to relate critical axiology with naturalist as well as with interpretive methodology.Keywords: critical social sciences, naturalism, interpretivism, value-neutrality in social sciences.

Straipsnyje nagrinėjama komunikacijos filosofijos kilmės problema ir šios problemos reikšmė šiuolaikinėms filosofinėms komunikacijos sampratoms. Tvirtinama, jog, priešingai nei teigia paplitusi pozicija, komunikacijos filosofija kyla ne iš antikinio domėjimosi komunikacijos ir medijų problematika, bet iš filosofų dėmesio pastarųjų dviejų šimtmečių visuomenės kaitai (industrializacijai, urbanizacijai, informatizacijai) ir naujųjų medijų plėtrai. SummaryThe article deals with the problem of the genesis of philosophy of communication and its impact on contemporary philosophical conceptions of communication. The article argues that, contrary to the widespread opinion, philosophy of communication originated not from the interest in problems of communication that could be traced back to the ancient Greek philosophy (namely Plato), but from the attention that is paid by philosophers to the recent changes in society (industrialization, urbanization, informatization) and the development of new media. Such an explanation of the genesis of philosophy of communication highlights some specific traits of contemporary communication, namely that the prevailing form of contemporary communication is mediated mass communication.Keywords: philosophy of communication, media philosophy, history of philosophy.

The present article seeks to discern the criteria or the quality of research, formulated and accepted within the scholarly community of the humanities. We argue that the scholars implicitly use these criteria opposing administrative evaluation. The analysis of these criteria revealed that they might be summarized in three broad categories – the novelty (originality, innovativeness) of the research; the excellence of the researcher (ability to conduct and describe the research); and the impact (academic as well as social-political). We argue that relevant criteria for the administrative evaluation of research in the humanities should draw on these perspectives.

Straipsnyje metateoriškai analizuojami informacijos visuomenės tyrimai. Tyrimo objek­tas – labiausiai cituojami šiai temai skirti sociologijos ir komunikacijos mokslų straipsniai, publikuoti tarp­tautinėje Web of Science duomenų bazėje. Išnagrinėję, kokiais būdais informacijos visuomenė konceptu­alizuojama, kokiuose kontekstuose ji aktualinama, kokias funkcijas ši sąvoka atlieka, straipsnio autoriai teigia, kad pagrindiniai debatai šiame lauke yra ne teoriniai ar metodologiniai, bet normatyviniai – tarp informacijos visuomenės entuziastų ir jos kritikų, o patys informacijos visuomenės tyrimai veikiau atliepia vyraujančių politinio ir viešojo diskursų nuostatas nei mokslinį interesą.

This article is a metatheoretical research of the foundations of information society studies. The research focuses on the most cited articles on the topic of information society from sociology and communication studies, published in the international Web of Science database. After analysing the methods by which information society is conceptualised, the contexts of where this keyword appears and the functions that it performs, the authors conclude that the most important debate in the field is neither theoretical or meth­odological, but rather normative – i.e., between the enthusiasts of information society as progressive social development and its adversaries – the exponents of critical theory. This leads to a conclusion that informa­tion society studies rather embody trends of political and public discourse than scholarly interests. ; Straipsnyje metateoriškai analizuojami informacijos visuomenės tyrimai. Social network sites (SNS) have recently become an active ground for interactions on contested and dissonant heritage, on the heritage of excluded and subaltern groups, and on the heritage of collective traumatic past events. Situated at the intersection between heritage studies, memory studies, Holocaust studies, social media studies and digital heritage studies, a growing body of scholarly literature has been emerging in the past 10 years, addressing online communication practices on SNS. This study, an integrative review of a comprehensive corpus of 80 scholarly works about difficult heritage on SNS, identifies the profile of authors contributing to this emerging area of research, the increasing frequency of publication after 2017, the prevalence of qualitative research methods, the global geographic dispersion of heritage addressed, and the emergence of common themes and concepts derived mostly from the authors 'home' fields of memory studies, heritage studies and (digital) media studies.
