The diversity of Asian-American culture & the adverse impact of stereotyping on their assimilation into US society are described. Of twenty different Asian-American groups, demographic data are provided for the most numerous -- those of Chinese, Japanese, Korean, Pilipino, & Southeast-Asian origin. Stratification within these communities, widely divergent access to education & subsequent upward mobility, & the impact of historical events such as the Japanese internment in WWII & the recent influx of Southeast-Asian refugees, are all analyzed. The heterogeneity of Asian-American culture & the volatility of group status given wide fluctuations in US foreign policy are emphasized. 2 Tables. Modified HA.
