"This collection invites us to think about how African-descended men are seen as both appealing and appalling, and exposed to eroticized hatred and violence and how some resist, accommodate, and capitalize on their eroticization. Drawing on James Baldwin and Frantz Fanon, the contributors examine the contradictions, paradoxes, and politico-psychosexual implications of Black men as objects of sexual desire, fear, and loathing. Critical Race Inquiry Launch, Sept. 30,2010. Keynote speaker: Dr. Tamari Kitossa: Bringing Race Back into Racism.

This essay aims to provide a socio-historical account of the role that white supremacy played in the Presidential ascendancy of Barack Obama. Far from transcending race, Mr. Obama explicitly crafted his political ontology to articulate a discourse of post-racism. A central claim I make is that Mr. Obama selectively and strategically appropriated the enterprise of anti-racism by deploying a postmodern amorphous blackness that simultaneously undermined it. On one hand he assuaged White anxiety about whether a Black President will seek to call in the lien African Americans have on the state and White US society. On the other, he propagated the belief that where Whites voted for him, this confirmed the triumphal defeat of racism. In either case, by trading on his ambiguous biography, his personage was made to affirm both the end of racism and the redundancy of anti-racist action.

This Special Issue—"Whiteness in the Age of White Rage"—names and interrogates what is implicit in anti-racist, Indigenous, and whiteness studies: white rage. Drawing on Carol Anderson's White Rage: The Unspoken Truth of Our Racial Divide (2017), we invited scholars to explore empirical and theoretical inquiry of how rage is a defining characteristic of settler colonialism, whiteness, and white supremacy in Canada. In this Introduction we elaborate how contemporaneously, historically, and theoretically a vital dimension of the configuration of whiteness in Canada is the normalization of rage as a property right of whiteness. Presently, as fascism is once again a global phenomenon, there is an opportunity for critical scholarship on whiteness in Canada to name and explicate the social effects and quotidian mobilization of rage in conservative and liberal articulations of white supremacy. We offer a general outline to the theme of whiteness in the age of white rage to introduce nascent scholarship that builds on the scholarship of Black, Indigenous, people of colour, and critical whiteness scholars.

Research in Canada has latched onto the explanation that the growth in interracial unions is both cause and consequence of progressive social change. The authors cast a skeptical eye on this regime of truth produced by positivistic statistical procedure and the speculative theory of social change as it connects to the state brand of tolerance. They offer a meta-theoretical critique that challenges the taken-for-granted assumption that the growth in interracial unions can be explained by multiculturalism, the presumed antiracist implications of these unions, and the supposed amorphousness that mixed-race children presumably embody. The authors seek to disrupt the mystification and commodification of interracial unions and the children of these unions as proxies for social change. Instead, they call for critically and historically informed qualitative and quantitative research that avoids deputizing interracial unions en masse as societal change agents. They call for other and more robust metrics for measuring the reduction of racism. Attendant to radically altering how interracial unions are imagined, it is necessary for theory and research practices to deeply engage with class, gender, race, sexuality, and asymmetries of power when examining the complex, contradictory, and joyous inner and outer life-worlds of interracial couples and families.

This article examines a selection of the North American scholarly research that calls for "moving beyond" a "Black/White binary paradigm." Some scholars suggest this paradigm limits or obscures a complex understanding of the historical record on race, racism, and racialization for Asian, Latina/o, Mexican, and Native Americans. On the face of it, the notion of a Black/White binary paradigm and the call to move beyond appears persuasive. The discourse of a Black/White binary paradigm, however, confuses, misnames, and simplifies the historical and contemporary experiences structured within what is, in fact, the racially incorporative matrix of a black/white Manicheanism. We assert this call sets up blackness and, by extension, people socially defined as "black" as impediments to multiracial coalition building. As a result, "moving beyond" is epistemologically faulty and politically harmful for African-descended people because it is based on "bad faith" toward blackness.

"Drawing on original work from leading African-Canadian academics across Canada and internationally, this book critically explores the challenges, prospects, and ongoing achievements of Black leadership in Canadian as it responds to the needs of African Canadians. Despite diversity in nationality and patterns of immigration and settlement and other factors that differentiate African Canadians from each other, leadership has long been an important issue as African Canadians confront the uniform problem of anti-blackness in Canada. The turn of the 21st century has brought about a 'changing of the guard' in Black leadership in this country. Confronted by the passing of eminent leaders such as Rose-Marie Brown, Charles Roach, Dudley Laws, Rocky Jones, and by the current virtual absence of Black electoral representations, there is a growing sense that Black leadership in Canada is in crisis or facing a serious deficit. This collection aims to counter the 'crisis' and 'deficit' narratives by positioning African-Canadian leadership as a vital but rarely appreciated element of Canada's civic culture. Overall, this book critically engages the foregoing issues and questions through a multidisciplinary exploration the challenges, prospects, and ongoing achievements of Black leadership in Canada as it responds to the shifting needs of African Canadians and other Canadians."--

"The essays in Nuances of Blackness in the Canadian Academy make visible the submerged stories of Black life in academia. They offer fresh historical, social, and cultural insights into what it means to teach, learn, research, and work while Black. In daring to shift from margin to centre, the book's contributors confront two overlapping themes. First, they resist a singular construction of Blackness that masks the nuances and multiplicity of what it means to be and experience the academy as a Black body. Second, they challenge the stubborn durability of anti-Black tropes, the dehumanization of Blackness, persistent deficit ideology, and the tyranny of low expectations that permeate the dominant idea of Blackness in the White colonial imagination. Operating at the intersections of discourse and experience, contributors reflect on how Blackness shapes academic pathways, ignites complicated and often difficult conversations, and re-imagines Black pasts, presents, and futures. This unique collection contributes to the articulation of more nuanced understandings of the ways in which Blackness is made, unmade, and remade in the academy and the implications for interrelated dynamics across and within post-secondary education, Black communities in Canada, and global Black diasporas."--
