A short reflection on the hip-hop studies movement focuses on the anti-hip-hop campaign that is being led by black scholars. Proponents of hip-hop studies maintain that hip-hop culture has a place in the university classroom because of its relevance in the lives of American youth & its potential impact on politics. It is noted that several organizations are advancing a new style of hip-hop activism at both the grassroots level & in electoral politics. Professors who oppose hip-hop studies see hip-hop as an attack on the civil rights tradition & its heroes. They object to its stereotypical images & antiauthority, anti-intellectual lyrics. It is suggested that these critics might gain a better understanding of why hip-hop is essential to youth activism by reading the body of work being produced by hip-hop intellectuals, thoroughly studying the music/culture (not just a few shocking lyrics), & personally seeing hip-hop artists perform. At the very least they would be better armed to do battle with hip-hop intellectuals. J. Lindroth
