In thirteenth-century Castile the concept of royal wisdom can be understood in two different but complementary ways: the first relates to the virtue of prudence and defines the ability of the king to exercise its function of government and justice (rex prudens); the second concerns the knowledge itself, which distinguishes the monarch from other rulers (rex litteratus). This article will focus on the image of rex litteratus, whose intellectual skills go far beyond the ability to read and write, and specifically in the case of Alfonso X culminated in his poetry (rey trovador). Similarly, the double nature of the Alfonsine works, both political and didactic, shall not be overseen, in the sense that it reveals the image of a king who cares about the transmission and the wide dissemination of knowledge (rex magister) while also highlighting the close relationship between Alfonso X's political and cultural projects.
; Based on an analysis of two key concepts – court and royal household – and of the classification of royal officials, as presented in the Espéculo and the Partidas, the present text aims to discover how the court of Alfonso X was organized. The criteria for the classification of political and administrative posts were quite varied. The legal texts analysed reveal that the king was the central figure in the court, around whom gravitated the various officials in accordance with the importance of their office and their proximity to the king.
This paper presents the image of the rex iustus, which is directly connected to what was considered the main role of the king: the administration of justice. In the first place, we analyse the Alfonsine corporate thought based on definitions of the elements that formed the political body provided by the Siete Partidas. The king's duty of keeping their people in justice reflects primarily on his role as a judge (rex iudex), which Alfonso X sought to centralize under his authority. In the second place, the notion of sovereignty, which is found in germination in the Alfonsine works, allows us to understand how it was possible for a thirteenth-century Castilian king to also exercise a legislative function (rex legislator). Finally, we analyse some of the most influential Roman law principles of the period, which reflect not only the theoretical justification for Alfonso X's centralization process but also, at the same time, the very factors that limited the king's powers.
This paper intends to share some general thoughts on the concept of propaganda and the problems related to its application to the medieval period, based on other studies dedicated to this subject not only in the Iberian area, but also on a wider context. In this connection, we shall analyse Alfonso X's political project, which was mainly characterised by efforts for the unification of the language and the legal system of his domains, but was also closely linked to his imperial pretension, cultural enterprises and desire of continuing the work initiated by his father FernandoIII. Finally, our intention is to examine the meaning of the expression "Alfonsine works" and, if we want these works to be considered as a potential instrument of royal propaganda, we shall also take into account their production, the extent of the king's participation in their creation process and their possible forms of dissemination.
The author of the article explains in which ways, and with what ends, the virtue of prudence can be associated with the notion of wisdom. She also studies how this relationship between prudence and wisdom occurs in the texts of Alfonso X, the Wise.
