An exploration of the impact of Yugoslavia's disintegration on the Hungarians & the Italians focuses on the status of minority rights in post-Yugoslav states. A description of the demographic & geographic situation of Italians & Hungarians notes the population of both groups in Slovenia, Croatia, & Serbia, according to censuses of 1991 & 2001/2002. The attitudes of Hungary & Italy toward their dispersed minorities & the political/cultural organizations of both groups are examined both before & after Yugoslavia's dissolution. The Socialist Federal Republic of Yugoslavia provided the Hungarians & Italians with very wide minority protection; however, the establishment of protections for these minorities has differed greatly from one post-Yugoslav state to the other. While Slovenia has increased legal protection for minorities, Hungarians & Italians in other areas have been less fortunate, especially in places like Croatia where Hungarian settlement territories were destroyed by war. It is hoped that the Italians & Hungarians of Slovenia will serve as a model for minority protection in the other post-Yugoslav states. 7 Tables, 4 Figures. J. Lindroth
