AbstractAnthropological research on policy and health underscores how policy reflects cultural ideologies and results in marginalizing specific populations. Ethnographic inquiry can further reveal the broader, unexpected effects of policy change. In this article, I describe how state legislators in Georgia revised an existing entitlement program to specifically exclude undocumented immigrants with kidney failure from receiving life‐sustaining care. This health policy change converged with broader efforts to financialize the US health system and resulted in undocumented immigrant patients dying; being medically repatriated to their countries of birth; placed in private, for‐profit dialysis centers; or obtaining care through a burdensome process involving a public hospital's emergency room. Drawing from Mbembe's concept of necropolitics, I show how policy changes left undocumented kidney failure patients in a state between life and death, revealing the hidden outcomes of policies targeting immigrants. As anti‐immigrant policies continue to be proposed in the United States, findings from this article provide a cautionary tale about the sweeping consequences of legislation that targets immigrants.

This article explores the syndemic interaction between poverty, food insecurity, and limited access to dental care among migrant farm laborers in Central Florida. Although a great deal of syndemic research examines the role of pathogen–pathogen interaction (PPI; Singer ; Ventura and Mehra ), social factors, such as poverty, may be of greater importance than the pathogens that infect the body (Singer and Clair ) and demand increased research and policy attention. The data presented in this article show how poverty, food insecurity, and limited access to dental care work synergistically to exacerbate poor health conditions, presenting a syndemic that necessitates increased attention to mitigate poverty circumstances and promote what I call "oral health security" in an effort to advocate for vulnerable populations.

This article highlights the collaboration between an evangelical faith‐based organization and secular activist organization to address the oral health needs of African American former farmworkers in Central Florida. Highlighting the FBO's evangelistic agenda, I discuss one FBO as a charitable health care provider filling a service gap within the broader health care system. In addition, I discuss the organizations' different levels of access to powerful agents of change, and the role of the anthropologist as an intermediary between the FBO and secular organization. This article first details the health concerns of the former farmworker population in Central Florida as they relate to farm labor and living in an environmentally harmful area. It then sheds light on systematic health care constraints in the United States that necessitate intervention from faith‐based organizations and secular activist organizations. Last, this article provides a case study of how an anthropologist, acting as an intermediary to connect a faith‐based group with an activist group, helped address one specific health need for former migrant farmworkers.

Human papillomavirus (HPV) can cause a number of anogenital cancers (i.e., cervical, penile, anal, vaginal, vulvar) and genital warts. A decade ago, the HPV vaccine was approved, and has been shown to be a public health achievement that can reduce the morbidity and mortality for HPV-associated diseases. Yet, the mistaken over-identification of HPV as a female-specific disease has resulted in the feminization of HPV and HPV vaccines. In this critical review, we trace the evolution of the intersection of science, politics, economics and gender norms during the original HPV vaccine approval, marketing era, and implementation. Given the focus on cervical cancer screening, women were identified as bearing the burden of HPV infection and its related illnesses, and the group responsible for prevention. We also describe the consequences of the feminization of HPV, which has resulted primarily in reduced protection from HPV-related illnesses for males. We propose a multilevel approach to normalizing HPV vaccines as an important aspect of overall health for both genders. This process must engage multiple stakeholders, including providers, parents, patients, professional organizations, public health agencies, policymakers, researchers, and community-based organizations.

Based on extensive field research, the essays in this volume illuminate the experiences of migrants from their own point of view, providing a critical understanding of the complex social reality in which each experience is grounded. Access to medical care for migrants is a fundamental right which is often ignored. The book provides a critical understanding of the social reality in which social inequalities are grounded and offers the opportunity to show that right to health does not correspond uniquely with access to healthcare

Despite the centrality of migration in our contemporary world, scholarship on mobility and health frequently separates migrants according to legal status, country of origin, destination, or health concern. Yet people on the move and health systems face challenges and opportunities that transcend these boundaries, including border fortification, neoliberal agendas, and climate change.
