Liberalism and Religion: The Case of Kant

Examines Immanuel Kant's views on liberal political thought & religion, which often defied public orthodoxy & the government. John Rawls's notion of "political liberalism" & his political conception of justice are reviewed, along with his arguments concerning the contribution of "free practical reason within the framework of free institutions" in the creation of reasonable comprehensive religious doctrines. Addressed are questions left unanswered by Rawls regarding precisely how this would come about by drawing on Kant's treatment of religion "within the boundaries of mere reason." Kant's ideas on ethics & politics are reviewed, considering his thoughts on the human nature of religion; the content of moral religion; & hope, moral law, & the "highest good" within an ethical community.
