Few empirical studies have examined the effects of the data collection technique upon the data obtained. To explore this relationship, 4 questions were asked of white unwed mothers about the appropriateness of premarital sex relations, if she is friendly with a man, if she likes him a lot, if she is in love with him, & if she plans to marry him. questionaies were completed by 150 F's in the offices of their MD's. Interviews were conducted with 77 maternity home residents, & 311 F's who had been identified as unwed mothers from birth certificates. Over 80% of the F's who were interviewed claimed that sex relations were never all right compared to 69% of those who completed questionaies. These diff's were consistently maintained when controls for prepregnancy residential area, educ parental occup & living arrangements prior to pregnancy were applied. Such diff's are interpreted as reflecting the deference of interviewed F's to a presumed normative attitude of the interviewer while more questionaie R's expressed permissive standards because no immediate person represented the assumed public morality of nonpermissiveness. These findings suggest that res involving expressions of deviance should include a consideration of the res technique. AA.
