The music video poses several questions in which the ordering of the senses becomes central: What does it mean to show a singing body, a close-up of a singer and her body parts (her open mouth, her hands, her lips, etc.)? Does the music video emphasize sight over hearing by becoming cinematic and theatrical? The tension between the somatic side of singing and the beautification of the singing, instrumental, working body through dancing brings a gendered vision to the fore that links the female body strictly with codes of beauty. A reading of Madonna's video "Take a Bow" allows for such an analysis in its tendency to dramatize the division of sound and image as in film: the image of the beautiful woman entails the use of voice through dubbing.

Several films starring Charlie Chaplin are analyzed to determine the influence of visual media on authority. It is contended that modern dissemination technologies have undermined traditional authority figures' abilities to control the media. In City Lights (1931), Chaplin's location during the unveiling ceremony of a monument is described as refocusing attention away from the memorial figure onto his own character, thus redirecting the focus of the camera. Although Modern Times (1936) examines the social & technological aspects of the film media, it is contended that Chaplin's "screwdriver ballet" predicts how technological advancements will decrease the participation of laborers in production processes. Moreover, in Chaplin's dual performances in The Great Dictator (1940), he uses both dissemination media & personal charisma for purposes of communication. Max Weber's theory of charismatic authority is extended to media celebrities; several examples of celebrities who wielded political influence by activating their charisma are presented. After discussing the notion of mass culture, it is concluded that contemporary media have not completely resolved traditional questions of authority. J. W. Parker

A discussion of the globalization of the mass media challenges Marshall McLuhan's (1989) vision of egalitarian, instantaneous communication in a global village, arguing that total simultaneity is not possible when local times are defined by geography, resulting in successive receptions creating chronological hierarchies. It is contended that, as a process that occurs in space & time, globalization can be accelerated or slowed down depending on relations of power & political options; hence, circulation can be seen as a metaphor for varying forms of domination. Further, centralization of the control of power politics is situated in a social-structural space based on unequal distribution of access from the First to the Fourth World, keeping cybertechnology bound to politically entrenched hierarchies. However, the possibility that new forms of transnational "virtual solidarity," eg, the Internet, will offer hope for alternative formulations is discussed. J. Lindroth

(ICK)
