AbstractTraditionally, family migration was conceptualized as a separate form of migration from labour migration. Increasingly socio‐economic criteria (labour market participation, language competence, financial resources, independence from welfare), have been applied to family migration policies in Europe, and are harder to fulfil by those with a weaker labour market position. Hence class now plays an increasingly significant role in stratifying the right to family migration. The article examines the imposition of minimum income requirements in three countries – the Netherlands, Norway and the UK – and the significance of class in its economic and cultural dimensions in meeting the requirement. For those without sufficient economic capital to meet the requirement, cultural capital may facilitate the development of coping strategies to overcome or reduce the duration of family separation. Class is not the only stratifying element: gender, age and ethnicity interact with and reinforce the effects of class.

Los cuidados se han convertido en un elemento predominante en gran parte de las investigaciones feministas sobre migraciones globalizadas y la transferencia de trabajo del Sur al Norte. El concepto de reproducción, en cambio, ha sido relegado durante años a un segundo plano, aunque ahora se está convirtiendo en el foco de los debates sobre la mercantilización de los cuidados en el hogar y las transformaciones de las políticas del estado de bienestar. Este artículo sostiene que, si vinculamos los diversos circuitos de migración y, sobre todo, los relacionados con el empleo y la familia, podremos comprender mejor las diferentes formas y recorridos de los cuidados en la reproducción de personas, familias y comunidades, tanto migrantes como no migrantes. Para ello, me retrotraigo a los trabajos estadounidenses sobre minorías racializadas y migrantes, así como sobre reproducción social estratificada. Asimismo, tomo algunas ideas de los actuales estudios asiáticos sobre circuitos migratorios generizados que establecen vínculos entre las migraciones por empleo y por matrimonio. También uso la noción de 'familias transnacionales' que pone de manifiesto cómo operan las políticas de género de la reproducción social, tanto en el seno como más allá de las familias, los hogares y las estructuras institucionales y de bienestar. Al contrario que en Asia, los estudios europeos apenas se han centrado en la vinculación que existe entre las migraciones laborales y las familiares desde el punto de vista de la reproducción social. Sin embargo, relacionar los diferentes tipos de migraciones permite comprender en su complejidad las trayectorias de los cuidados y el modo en que éstas contribuyen a la reproducción social.

Care has come to dominate much feminist research on globalized migrations and the transfer of labor from the South to the North, while the older concept of reproduction had been pushed into the background but is now becoming the subject of debates on the commodification of care in the household and changes in welfare state policies. This article argues that we could achieve a better understanding of the different modalities and trajectories of care in the reproduction of individuals, families, and communities, both of migrant and nonmigrant populations by articulating the diverse circuits of migration, in particular that of labor and the family. In doing this, I go back to the earlier North American writing on racialized minorities and migrants and stratified social reproduction. I also explore insights from current Asian studies of gendered circuits of migration connecting labor and marriage migrations as well as the notion of global householding that highlights the gender politics of social reproduction operating within and beyond households in institutional and welfare architectures. In contrast to Asia, there has relatively been little exploration in European studies of the articulation of labor and family migrations through the lens of social reproduction. AbstractImmigration policies reflect to varying degrees the calibration and stratification of desirable knowledge. The criteria adopted have varied across countries and immigration systems. However, despite the evidence that skilled women migrate more than men, little attention has been paid to the extent to which immigration policies impact differently on women and men and result in gender inequalities, and how the valuation of skills is gendered in its criteria and outcomes. Several European states have developed policies to attract the (highly) skilled in an attempt to make themselves as competitive as possible within a knowledge economy. The key criteria are salaries and educational qualifications which, together with the differential evaluation of skills, produce gender outcomes. This article explores how European policies for the (highly) skilled produce and reinforce inequalities in gendered circulations, not just between women and men, but also in terms of intersectional differences, such as race/nationality and age.

This article examines the significance of skilled labour migration and the sectors in which skilled female migrants are employed. It considers some of the major reasons for the lack of attention given to gendered aspects of skilled migration. Nonetheless there have been some interesting theoretical and empirical advances in our understanding of skilled female migrants, which go beyond a general appreciation of the hardships they confront in the course of migration. These studies explore in more detail both the obstacles and their responses and strategies to entry into the labour market and deskilling and in specific sectors and states as well as in the European Union. The article also argues that how immigration regulations shape gendered skilled migrations is a topic which deserves more attention. ; Este artículo examina el significado de la migración laboral cualificada y los sectores en los que las mujeres migrantes cualificadas están empleadas. Considera alguna de las principales razones que explican la falta de atención que han recibido los aspectos de género de la migración cualificada. Sin embargo, se han producido algunos interesantes avances teóricos y empíricos en la comprensión de las mujeres migrantes cualificadas, que van más allá de una apreciación general de los inconvenientes a los que se enfrentan en el transcurso del proceso migratorio. Estos estudios exploran en detalle tanto los obstáculos como sus respuestas y estrategias a la hora de acceder al mercado de trabajo y de experimentar una pérdida de cualificación en sectores específicos, tanto en los estados como en la UE. Die jüngere Debatte über die Relevanz der Klassenanalyse, über klassenspezifische Subjektivität und deren geschlechtsbezogene Dimensionen beschränkt sich nach Meinung der Autorin auf den Nationalstaat. Vor dem Hintergrund umfangreicher Migrationsbewegungen und der ungleich verteilten Chancen auf Migration bzw. der Verbesserung von Chancen durch Migration erscheint es jedoch wichtig, einen Rahmen zu entwickeln, innerhalb dessen die transnationalen und globalen Ungleichheitsmuster auch jenseits der Grenzen des Nationalstaats zu begreifen sind. So gilt es zum Beispiel die Bedingungen zu verstehen, unter denen die verschiedenen Formen des Kapitals in den Aufnahmeländern anerkannt werden, sowie die Implikationen, die diese Bedingungen für die wachsende Kluft zwischen arm und reich haben. Die Autorin fasst zunächst die wichtigsten Überlegungen zu den Kontexten und Strukturen dieser Problematik (Hierarchie von Nationalstaaten, Migrationspolitik, Kapitaltransfer) zusammen. Auf der Grundlage erster empirischer Erkenntnisse zur Klassen- und Geschlechtsspezifik von Migration stellt sie anschließend einige Schlüsseldimensionen des Stratifikationssystems vor. Sie konzentriert sich dabei auf die widersprüchlichen Klassenzugehörigkeiten und auf die Barrieren für den Transfer kulturellen und sozialen Kapitals über Staatsgrenzen hinweg.
