»Our society has undergone a paradigm shift. In the information age, you and I are the alpha males,« Dr Leonard Hofstadter, experimental physicist and protagonist of the hit sitcom »The Big Bang Theory«, assures himself and his fellow scientists. The success of this and similar formats in American popular culture proves his point: Science has finally discovered the formula for cool. This interdisciplinary study examines how »cool«, a key aesthetic and affective category in the American imagination, informs contemporary representations of technoscience. Analyzing selected audiovisual productions, Judith Kohlenberger sheds light on current processes of interaction between science and popular culture, two pivotal sources for change in post-industrial America. Judith Kohlenberger (Dr. phil.) is a post-doctoral researcher with a degree in English and American studies from the University of Vienna. Her research interests include gender and cultural theory, popular culture, North American film and television, cultural studies of science and science and technology studies, romanticism and postmodernism, and hemispheric approaches to the Americas. She works and lives in Vienna, Austria.

Der Beitrag widmet sich Dimensionen des Wir-Begriffs und daraus abgeleiteten Formen der Solidarität. Die gegenseitige Assoziation in einer Gemeinschaft, ob real oder imaginiert, wird als Grundvoraussetzung für den solidarischen Impetus verstanden. Kulturtheoretisch steht dahinter die intersubjektive Abhängigkeit des Selbst vom Anderen in einer Hegelschen Dialektik, die im post-kolonialen Konzept des Othering problematisiert wird. Das "Fremd(er)machen" von Menschen, die als sozioökonomisch "unten" oder ethnisch/nationalstaatlich "draußen", also im Spivakschen Sinne als subaltern, konstruiert sind, wird als wesentlicher Faktor für eine Fragmentierung der Gesellschaft beschrieben, aus der Ent-Solidarisierung folgt. Anhand empirischer Befunde argumentiert der Beitrag, Solidarität nicht als binär zu verstehen, sondern als dynamisches Kontinuum mit Nuancierungen, die horizontal wie vertikal changieren können.

70 years after it was signed, the Geneva Refugee Convention is degenerating into an empty phrase. Its central promise that no one with a "well-founded fear of persecution" may be turned back stands in stark contrast to the current situation at Europe's borders. Yet, the EU, with its value-based self-image, has an essential role to play in guaranteeing the Convention's promise for the next 70 years and beyond. So even if member states will not completely abandon the construction of a "Fortress Europe", they should at least consider building rawbridges. AbstractThis article provides insights into the role of the nuclear family for refugees' social capital in Austria, with a focus on gender‐specific differences. We use a multimethod approach, based on quantitative data from a survey with 548 refugees from Syria and Afghanistan and semi‐structured group discussions (N = 17 informants). In our analysis, we study frequency of contacts in first language and in German, as proxies for the bonding and bridging social capital. Marital status, childlessness and family work were identified as important factors: Frequency of contact substantially varied by gender and family context. Of all surveyed groups, married childless women and married men with children had the least contacts in both languages. Although an unequal distribution of childcare may limit women's time resources, we observed a positive association between motherhood and frequency of contact in German.

Am 8. Juni 2023 einigte sich der Rat für Justiz und Inneres der EU auf eine Reform wesentlicher Teile des europäischen Asylrechts, die als Verhandlungsposition in den Deliberationen mit dem Europäischen Parlament dienen wird (Rat der EU 2023a). Die EU-Kommissarin für Inneres Ylva Johansson bezeichnete die Einigung als "historisch" (Vertretung in Deutschland 2023), ebenso wie die deutsche Innenministerin Nancy Faser (ZDF 2023). Konterkariert wurden dieses Lob von teils fundamentaler Kritik von NGOs wie Pro Asyl und Expert:innen wie dem deutschen Rat für Migration (Pro Asyl 2023; Metzger 2023). Seitdem ist ein Ringen um die Deutungshoheit im Gange, das quer durch das Parteienspektrum ausgetragen wird und ein erhebliches mediales Echo erzeugt. Erste wissenschaftliche Kommentierungen haben den Beschluss bereits eingeordnet und auf einige Problematiken hingewiesen (Glorius 2023; Pichl et al. 2023). Der vorliegende Policy Brief vertieft und erweitert diese Analysen, indem er die bedeutendsten Aspekte und Implikationen des Reformvorhabens ausleuchtet.
