The study explores the phenomenon of popular violence in the first months and years after the end of World War I on the basis of a comparison between the Bohemian lands, forming the central part of the newly established Czechoslovakia, and Austria, as another successor state to the former Habsburg monarchy. Aside from the continuities, new forms of violence increasingly emerged in the first years after the end of the war, and also the "language" of violence was transformed. While in Czechoslovakia, the framework within which people were learning to understand the new world was shaped by the national and republican discourse oriented to the future, in Austria the collective identities and mentalities were being formed along the lines of particular party political blocks. In both cases, the nationalization and politicization of violence respectively contributed to the emergence of new forms of popular violence; but at the same time they could also be used for its de-escalation, necessary for the re-integration of society disrupted by the wartime experience. However, even if both countries went out from the war on different paths, the violence stayed part of their political culture and it could be mobilized again.

'Paths out of the Apocalypse' fundamentally rethinks some key debates in the scholarship on early 20th-century Central Europe, the First World War, violence, nationalism and modern European comparative social and cultural history, considering the population of the hinterland as an active subject that decisively shaped the outcomes of the war.

Whether victorious or not, Central European states faced fundamental challenges after the First World War as they struggled to contain ongoing violence and forge peaceful societies. Jahrhundertelange Nachbarschaft und dreihundert Jahre gemeinsam verbrachte Staatlichkeit verbinden Österreicher und Tschechen - ein Volk mit zwei Sprachen oder doch missgünstige Cousins? Dieses Buch lässt in zwölf Kapiteln die Geschichte der vergangenen zwei Jahrhunderte des Zusammen-, Auseinander-, Nebeneinander- und Gegeneinanderlebens Revue passieren. 27 Historikerinnen und Historiker aus beiden Ländern spüren in zwölf Überblickskapiteln Gemeinsamem und Trennendem nach. Sie stellen dabei nicht zwei Nationalgeschichten nebeneinander, sondern zeigen, wie sich bestimmte Entwicklungen da wie dort in die Gesellschaften eingeschrieben haben. Nach "Völkerfrühling" und bürgerlicher Revolution folgte noch im gemeinsamen Staat eine Periode der Entfremdung. Gemeinsam verlebt, unterschiedlich erlebt, könnte man das Zusammenleben in den letzten Jahrzehnten der Habsburgermonarchie und im Ersten Weltkrieg bezeichnen. Die nach 1918 neu entstandenen Staaten (Deutsch-)Österreich und Tschechoslowakei lebten im Spannungsfeld von Konkurrenz, Miteinander und desinteressiertem Nebeneinander. Trotz der verschiedenen Staats- und (nach 1948) Systemzugehörigkeit gab es Gemeinsamkeiten. Nach 1989 und dem Fall des "Eisernen Vorhangs" schienen Konflikte wie "Temelin" oder die "Benes-Dekrete" zu dominieren: Dies, obwohl die gegenseitigen wirtschaftlichen, politischen und kulturellen Kontakte so eng wie seit 1918 nicht mehr sind. Das von der Ständigen Konferenz österreichischer und tschechischer Historiker zum gemeinsamen kulturellen Erbe (SKÖTH) initiierte Buch soll zum gegenseitigen Kennenlernen und Verständnis beitragen.

Staletí sousedství a víc než tři sta let strávených ve společném státě spojují Čechy a Rakušany - jeden lid dvou jazyků, nebo přeci jen nepřejícné bratrance? Předkládaná publikace přináší průřezové zamyšlenínad historií vzájemného soužití, odcizení či odcizování se, nezájmu a v neposlední řadě i konfliktů uplynulých dvou století. Dvacet sedm historiček a historiků z obou zemí zkoumá ve dvanácti přehledových kapitolách, co Čechy a Rakušany spojovalo, i co je dělilo. Netvoří přitom dva souběžné příběhy národních dějin, ale ukazují, jakým způsobem se určité fenomény zapsaly do dané společnosti. Na "jaro národů" a revoluce let 1848/49 navázala ještě ve společném státě etapapostupného odcizování. Společně zažité, leč rozdílně prožité, i tak lze charakterizovat poslední desetiletí společného života v habsburské monarchii a za první světové války. Vztah Československa a (Německého) Rakouska, států nově vzniklých po roce 1918, poznamenaly vzájemná konkurence, nezájem, ale i spolupráce. Přes příslušnost k jiným státům a (po roce 1948) také k jiným blokům, existovaly nadále některé společné rysy. Po roce 1989 a pádu "železné opony" však začaly vzájemnému dialogu dominovat konfliktní témata typu "Temelín" či "Benešovy dekrety", a to i přesto, že oboustranné hospodářské, politické a kulturní kontakty byly nejužší od roku 1918. Kniha iniciovaná Stálou konferencí českých a rakouských historiků ke společnému kulturnímu dědictví (SKČRH) je příspěvkem k vzájemnému poznání a porozumění.
