Der vorliegende Beitrag gibt einen Überblick über die Diversität von Zuwanderungsprozessen in ländliche Räume Europas. Konzeptionell schließt er an das new mobility paradigm an und versteht Migrationsprozesse demnach als Teil von Mobilitäten. Aufgrund der Annahme, dass Individuen im Rahmen von Migrationsprozessen in einem Kontinuum von Mobilität und Beständigkeit zu verorten sind, etablieren Migranten temporäre Fixierungen an Orten. Zudem werden Migrationsprozesse in ländliche Räume durch Narrative von Ländlichkeit bestimmt. Die Deutungsmacht funktional-struktureller Perspektiven auf das Ländliche zur Erklärung von Zuwanderung wird daher durch den Einbezug sozialkonstruktivistischer Ansätze relativiert. Anschließend wird die Diversität von Wanderungsdynamiken in ländlichen Räumen Europas mit den Formen Amenity/Lifestyle Migration, Rückwanderung, Arbeitsmigration, Fluchtmigration überblickshaft dargestellt, wobei insbesondere deren temporärer Charakter hervorgehoben wird. Der Beitrag schließt mit Ausführungen zu Auswirkungen von Zuwanderung in ländliche Räume auf Wohnungsmärkte, Wirtschaft und Arbeitsmarkt sowie Sozialleben und Politik. Dabei wird deutlich, dass die sozio-demographische und sozio-ökonomische Diversität der Migranten selbst wie auch die lokal-regionalen, strukturellen Kontexte bei der Einschätzung, inwiefern Zuwanderer als Akteure des Wandels in ländlichen Räumen

Das vorliegende Buch ist als Werkzeugkasten für die angewandte und praxisorientierte Migrations- und Integrationsforschung konzipiert. Nach einer Einführung in die wichtigsten Konzepte der transdisziplinären und partizipativen Forschung werden zentrale methodische Voraussetzungen und Herausforderungen dargestellt. Kernstück des Buches sind die einzelnen Instrumente, die zur kollaborativen Bewertung der Integrationsarbeit und der Auswirkungen von Migration anregen. Das Praxiswerk, das auch Anregungen für die Reflexion und Ergebnisverbreitung enthält, richtet sich an Personen aus Wissenschaft, Politik sowie an Praktikerinnen und Praktiker in öffentlichen Verwaltungen, zivilgesellschaftlichen Einrichtungen und an Ehrenamtliche.

AbstractTaking the example of recognized refugees in rural Germany, and following the housing pathways approach, the paper addresses the complex interplay of individual and family‐related residential preferences over time as well as structural factors regarding access to housing and associated settlement and integration. Results are from a long‐term empirical study that encompassed both refugees' and local actors' views. Mechanisms and practices of exclusion that prevent refugees from accessing appropriate private housing are related to the negotiation of residential preferences about where and how to live, as well as to structural aspects such as the pattern of local housing markets, accessibility of infrastructures or the unwillingness of landlords to let to refugees. The paper concludes to highlight the role of place in housing trajectories and the significance of social resources within refugees' practices and local intermediaries' strategies to overcome exclusion and provision of access to rural housing.

AbstractUsing the example of Vilcabamba in Ecuador, this article explores the ways that migrants from the USA materialise their quest for better lives by relocating to small communities in the Global South. Taking a lifestyle migration approach, we explore the ways migrants interpret and perform rurality in their post‐migration lives according to their economic and symbolically privileged status. Empirical data gathered from biographical narrative interviews with immigrants and guideline‐based interviews with experts show that migrants construct their own, mostly idealised, meanings of rurality; for instance, through the enactment of a healthy way of life close to nature, and social community spirit. Performing their privileged status through everyday practices, lifestyle migrants transfer their mostly Western understandings of rurality, derived from notions of the rural idyll, to other socio‐cultural settings. Consequently, they foster various transformations of local society, economy and public space. At the same time, however, via critical self‐reflection, they exhibit an ambivalent attitude to these transformations.

Contemporary immigration processes, such as forced migration and labour-induced mobility, as well as lifestyle and leisure-oriented movements, increasingly affect areas in Europe that are considered as peripheral or rural. Volunteering is an important way to include immigrants at a local scale, especially in small towns and municipalities with limited arrival infrastructure. With the recent increase in immigrants, including in rural areas, volunteering practices for this target group have been much discussed, albeit with an emphasis on immigrants as vulnerable beneficiaries. There are few studies that focus on immigrants' volunteering practices, or their function for the individual and receiving community, while empirical evidence for rural areas is explicitly lacking. In this article, we address immigrants as active agents with recourse to the concept of agency and unravel, firstly, the meanings they attribute to volunteering and reasons for their mobilisation; secondly, their access to volunteering in the German countryside; and thirdly their reflecting, practising, and sharing of agency through volunteering with an impact on themselves and their rural communities. Drawing on a qualitative, biographical‐narrative study of 72 immigrants in rural Germany, we show how cultures of volunteering—or how it is practised in different contexts—inform immigrants' current activities, ranging from leisure practices to neighbourly help and supporting the inclusion of new arrivals. We illustrate the importance of opportunity structures and social networks for accessing volunteering and reveal individual and altruistic reasons for doing it, such as facilitating language acquisition and enhancing one's participation, showing solidarity with immigrants, or gratitude towards the receiving society, often coinciding with expected outcomes. Volunteering allows immigrants to "perform agency" and fosters both belonging and responsibility taking for the dwelling place.

Die Bevölkerungsstruktur und das Leben in ländlichen Räumen wurden in den vergangenen Jahren durch die Ankunft und das Bleiben von Geflüchteten diverser. Die Teilhabe der Neuzugewanderten am Arbeitsmarkt ist einerseits aus integrationspolitischer Sicht wie auch für die regionale Wirtschaft relevant und erfüllt andererseits für sie selbst verschiedene Funktionen. Der (potenziellen) Selbstständigkeit von geflüchteten Neuzugewanderten wurde in Deutschland bislang jedoch wenig Aufmerksamkeit zuteil. Am Beispiel der Gründung von Lebensmittelgeschäften in ländlichen Räumen Deutschlands wurden multiperspektivisch die Aspirationen von Geflüchteten am Arbeitsmarkt, die Gründungs- und Geschäftspraxis von Betreibern sowie die Sichtweisen der Kundinnen und Kunden untersucht. Die durchgeführten qualitativen Interviews mit (potenziell) selbstständigen geflüchteten Neuzugewanderten und (halb)standardisierten Befragungen von Kundinnen und Kunden bilden die Datengrundlage für diesen Beitrag. Konzeptionell gerahmt wird er von Forschungsarbeiten zur Teilhabe von Migrantinnen und Migranten am Arbeitsmarkt und migrantischem Unternehmertum (immigrant entrepreneurship) bzw. der Unterform Flüchtlingsunternehmertum (refugee entrepreneurship). Die Ergebnisse zeigen vielfältige Bedeutungen von Beschäftigung und einen ausgeprägten Wunsch nach Selbstständigkeit, strukturelle wie auch individuelle Hürden bei der Gründung von Geschäften und die Praxis co-ethnischer Beschäftigung.

In this article, we suggest (im)mobility biography as a method for reconstructing human (im)mobilities and related negotiations of meanings of place, time and social interaction. Based on biographical-narrative approaches and participatory ideals the combination of life history interviewing with a participatory timeline tool is the best fit for capturing individuals' life-worlds over time. After presenting theoretical presuppositions on relational meanings of place, time and social interaction, we provide an overview of biographical and participatory research in the context of human (im)mobilities and sketch methodological origins of the life history interview and the timeline tool. Furthermore, we address issues essential for planning and preparing (im)mobility biography, and demonstrate two different applications of the method in migration contexts in Germany and Ecuador. Subsequently, we present options for analysis and interpretation of textual and graphical data outputs. Keeping in mind strengths and challenges, we consider (im)mobility biography a valuable method for capturing (im)mobile life-worlds as well as contextual embeddedness of individual decision-making on moving or staying. Especially in terms of its participatory orientation, the visualization of migration trajectories facilitates structuration and memorization of life histories, allows for shared analysis even at the interview stage, and encourages participants to reflect on their biographies.

AbstractThis article develops mobility mapping as a valuable space-related instrument to tackle the lack of attention to the meanings of places and everyday spatial mobility in the process of refugee settlement. Referring to two consecutive case studies carried out with asylum seekers and recognized refugees in rural Germany, we discuss the surplus of this tool considering both peculiarities in implementation and the opportunities of analysis of respondent-generated maps. Experiences from this trial research point out ways of implementing a tool that focuses on the graphic and visual dimension of knowledge creation. Relying on principles of participatory research, this tool can help to diminish power asymmetries between the researcher and the participant and acknowledge individuals' competencies in terms of language. Depending on the aim of the study, the empirical data generated can be analysed both as a product and as a process. Results indicate added value by revealing the importance of spatial dimensions in asylum seekers' and refugees' life-worlds, encompassing the construction of individually important places as well as spatial mobility and accessibility. For practitioners, the implementation of the tool provides an opportunity to enhance participant-oriented planning and capacity building, such as in terms of networks and infrastructures, that addresses both individuals' needs and spatial structures.

In einigen ländlich-peripheren Gebieten Europas können in den letzten Jahrzehnten Zuwanderungen von sogenannten Lifestyle Migranten beobachtet werden. Am Beispiel von Regionen in Frankreich, Österreich und Spanien werden ökonomische und soziale Auswirkungen dieses Zuzugs diskutiert. Durch den Erwerb von (Ferien-)Immobilien "auf dem Land" agieren Briten in Westfrankreich, Deutsche in Südostspanien und Senioren in Ostösterreich als ökonomische Impulsgeber für die lokale Wirtschaft. Soziales Engagement beweisen die Zuwanderer durch nachbarschaftliche und wohltätige Unterstützungsleistungen. Ein aktives Einbringen in die Gesellschaft am neuen Wohnort wird in den meisten Fällen angestrebt. Auch wenn es sich bei vielen Zugezogenen um temporäre oder kurzfristige Zuwanderer handelt, so kann im Beitrag gezeigt werden, dass es sich um eine gewinnbringende Form der Einwanderung handelt. Ländliche Regionen können von der Zuwanderung von Lifestyle Migranten profitieren und die positive Bewertung der Lebensqualität vor Ort kann entscheidend zu einem Imagewandel ländlicher Räume Europas beitragen.

Eine zunehmende Zahl von Asylbewerbern erreichte in den vergangenen Jahren Europa und wurde auf der Grundlage staatlicher Verteilungspolitiken auch in ländlichen Gebieten untergebracht. Diese Form internationaler Zuwanderung in ländliche Räume wurde in der Forschung bisher nur randständig betrachtet, wenngleich sie von unterschiedlichen Akteuren als regionaler Entwicklungsimpuls gesehen wird, mithilfe dessen sich Infrastrukturrückbau in Folge von Abwanderung und Geburtenrückgang sowie Arbeitskräftemangel entgegenwirken ließe. Es ist unklar, wie persistent diese Zuwanderungsprozesse für ländliche Räume sind und ob Asylbewerber auch nach der Zuerkennung des Flüchtlingsstatus, wenn sie ihren Wohnstandort frei wählen dürfen, auf dem Land wohnen bleiben (staying put) oder in die Städte weiterwandern (onward migration). Am Beispiel zweier Landkreise im Bayerischen Wald (Deutschland) wird im Beitrag die Wohnstandortmobilität anerkannter Flüchtlinge vor dem Hintergrund von individuellen Wohnstandortwünschen und strukturellen Faktoren wie lokalem Wohnungs- und Arbeitsmarkt, sozialem Umfeld und rechtlichen Aspekten diskutiert. Unter Zuhilfenahme des Integrationsmodells von Ager und Strang werden dabei strukturelle Spezifika ländlicher Räume für die Entscheidung über Bleiben oder Weiterwandern herausgearbeitet. Basierend auf leitfadengestützten Experteninterviews mit lokalen Akteuren zeigen empirische Daten sowohl Land-Stadt-Wanderung, Rückwanderung in ländliche Räume, Zuwanderung in ländliche Räume und rural staying. Individuelle Unsicherheitsfaktoren unterstreichen jedoch den vorläufigen Charakter der Wohnstandortmobilität anerkannter Flüchtlinge. Bei der Suche nach Wohnraum vor Ort und der Integration von Geflüchteten im sozialen Wohnumfeld kommt der Unterstützung durch lokale Akteure eine bedeutende Rolle zu, die direkt oder indirekt Einfluss auf die Wohnstandortmobilität hat. Dabei zeigen lokal-regionale Unterschiede die Heterogenität ländlicher Räume.
