Tarkastelen tutkielmassani kodin sisäistä dynamiikkaa naisten kirjoittamissa psykologisissa nykytrillereissä kodin ja naiseuden näkökulmasta, ja analysoin miten koti kuvataan pelon ja henkisen ja fyysisen väkivallan näyttämönä romaanien naishahmoille. Lisäksi tutkin sukupuoliroolien, yhteiskunnan luomien paineiden, sekä kodin ja avioliiton vaikutusta naisten sukupuoli-identiteetin rakentumiseen nyky-yhteiskunnassa. Tutkimukseni keskiössä on kaksi romaania, jotka ajankohtaisilla teemoillaan johtivat tutkimuskysymyksen muodostumiseen – amerikkalaiskirjailija Gillian Flynnin Kiltti tyttö (2012), ja brittikirjailija Paula Hawkinsin Nainen junassa (2015). Molemmat ovat saavuttaneet suuren suosion, ja teoksia pidetäänkin laajalti naisten rikoskirjallisuuden uutena tulemisena. Molemmat teokset sovitettiin myös elokuviksi vuosina 2014 ja 2016, mutta tutkielmani rajallisen pituuden vuoksi käsittelen tutkimuksessani vain alkuperäisteoksia. Kumpikin teoksista käsittelee tarkastelemiani teemoja – naiseutta, kotia, avioliittoa, ja identiteettiä – lähes yksinomaan naisnäkökulmasta. Tutkielman alussa esittelen naisten psykologisia trillereitä käsittelevän ilmiön tutkimukseni sydämessä, ja jatkan rakentamalla analyysini tueksi teoriapohjan, joka kattaa muun muassa postfeminismin tutkimuksen lieveilmiöineen, sekä genreteoriaa rikoskirjallisuudesta ja gotiikasta. Jo teoriaosuudessa korostuu tutkimukseni naiskeskeisyys – valitsemani teoreettiset näkökulmat lähestyvät tutkielmalleni oleellisia teemoja naiseuden ja naisten kokemusten kautta. Tämä sama pohjavire kantaa koko tutkielman läpi. Analyysissani keskityn edellä mainittujen teemojen syventämiseen Kiltti tyttö- ja Nainen junassa -romaanien puitteissa. Romaanien lähiluku paljastaa yhteyksiä kodin, avioliiton, ulkomaailman paineiden ja naishahmojen sukupuoli-identiteetin rakentumisen välillä. Valtaosan tutkielman laajuudesta kattavassa analyyttisessa keskustelussa lajittelen primäärimateriaalini neljään temaattiseen alueeseen – avioliitto, koti, äitiys ja yhteiskunnan sukupuolittuneet paineet sekä naiseudelle asetetut erilaiset roolit. Lopuksi esittelen päätelmäni kodin, yhteiskunnan ja naiseuden välisistä yhteyksistä. Tulosten mukaan suurin rooli on yhteiskunnalla, joka edelleen pyrkii ohjailemaan naisia ja naiseutta. Tämä aiheuttaa edellä kuvatun kaltaisia ongelmia naisten yksityiselämässä. Yksiselitteisten tulosten sijaan pyrinkin purkamaan tutkimustani tavalla, joka paitsi antaa teemoille päätöksen, myös herättää mielenkiintoa, kannustaa lisätutkimuksiin ja perustelee tutkimani ilmiön ajankohtaisuutta.

For many years, environmental politics was seen as a relatively light policy area. In many European countries environmental issues were usually delegated to the Greens. As a result, until recently, climate and environmental policy has been dominated by the political approach and emphasis of the green movement. Today, however, political leaders across Europe are finally seeing how political environmental politics actually is. There is also a growing understanding that the green approach may not be the only possible way forward. Due to its top-down, bureaucratic and inflexible approach to the policy area, the green agenda may in fact sometimes even be dangerous. Thus, this article argues that the time has come to shift the paradigms of environmental politics and climate politics from the politics of limitation to the politics of possibilities. The European People's Party family could offer a real alternative to the green agenda and show the merits of environmental subsidiarity.

The overall aim of DEFINE is to provide a methodology to define reference conditions for nutrient concentrations in the coastal zone of the Baltic Sea. This will aid the national authorities that surround the Baltic basin in implementing the EU's Water Framework Directive (WFD) by providing decision-makers with a methodology to assess reference conditions and the degree of past and present departure from this state, such that appropriate policy and management measures can be taken at national and European levels. DEFINE adopts a palaeoecological approach grounded on diatom-based transfer functions, which can then be applied to define background total nitrogen (TN) concentrations in estuaries and coastal areas over the entire Baltic Sea. All transfer functions and necessary supporting documentation will be publicly available as a coherent management tool and accessible via the MOLTEN/DEFINE web page (http://craticula.ncl.ac.uk/Molten/jsp/).

We carried out a coordinated survey of mountain lakes covering the main ranges across Europe (including Greenland), sampling 379 lakes above the local tree line in 2000. The objectives were to identify the main sources of chemical variability in mountain lakes, define a chemical classification of lakes, and develop tools to extrapolate our results to regional lake populations through an empirical regionalisation or upscaling of chemical properties. 2. We investigated the main causes of chemical variability using factor analysis (FA) and empirical relationships between chemistry and several environmental variables. Weathering, sea salt inputs, atmospheric deposition of N and S, and biological activity in soils of the catchment were identified as the major drivers of lake chemistry. 3. We tested discriminant analysis (DA) to predict the lake chemistry. It was possible to use the lithology of the catchments to predict the range of Ca 2+ and SO4 2) into which a lake of unknown chemistry will decrease. Lakes with lower SO4 2) concentrations have little geologically derived S, and better reflect the variations in atmospheric S loading. The influence of marine aerosols on lakewater chemistry could also be predicted from the minimum distance to the sea and altitude of the lakes. 4. The most remarkable result of FA was to reveal a factor correlated to DOC (positively) and NO3 ) (negatively). This inverse relationship might be the result either of independent processes active in the catchment soils and acting in an opposite sense, or a direct interaction, e.g. limitation of denitrification by DOC availability. Such a relationship has been reported in the recent literature in many sites and at all scales, appearing to be a global pattern that could reflect the link between the C and N cycles. 5. The concentration of NO3 ) is determined by both atmospheric N deposition and the processing capacity of the catchments (i.e. N uptake by plants and soil microbes). The fraction of the variability in NO3 ) because of atmospheric deposition is captured by an independent factor in the FA. This is the only factor showing a clear pattern when mapped over Europe, indicating lower N deposition in the northernmost areas. 6. A classification has been derived which takes into account all the major chemical features of the mountain lakes in Europe. FA provided the criteria to establish the most important factors influencing lake water chemistry, define classes within them, and classify the surveyed lakes into each class.
