The book of young Lewis Mumford (1895–1990) entitled Sticks and Stones: A Study of American Architecture and Civilization (first published in 1924) is a condensed version of his philosophy of city and a research program completed in his rich oeuvre. The title is telling: the starting point of Mumford is the idea that the architecture of a city is an objectified presentation of the value-system of the given civilisation. Stick and stones are not only sticks and stones: the material infrastructure is an embodiment of the values of civilisation, which are the basic motivating factors behind human actions. In other words: city is a mirror of civilisation; if the observer decodes the message encoded in sticks and stones, he/she gets the value-structure of the civilisation having produced the city. However, there is a mutual interdependence: human beings living in the city are not only passive possessors of a heritage determining one-sidedly their actions but they modify and restructure urban spaces: sticks and stones form our values, at the same time our values influence the concrete arrangement of sticks and stones. Creative city-planning is vital important. It gives possibility for the redirection of a civilisation's future historical way. At the same time, creativity, in Mumford's interpretation, does not mean the profit-generating capacity of the city; it has to serve the well-being of all citizens.
Abstract The paper's aim is a critical reconstruction concerning the ideas of the most renowned representatives of the Hungarian Popular Movement: László Németh, Ferenc Erdei, and István Bibó. It contextualizes the notion of "populism", which has semantically become overburdened up to now: it means everything and nothing. The Hungarian Populist Movement must be interpreted in the interwar Central-Eastern European and Hungarian contexts. The notion of dual society was a catchword for the abovementioned thinkers; according to its basic tenet, in Hungarian society, there is a symbiosis of modern and premodern segments. The demand for emancipation of the peasantry as a common denominator was frequently connected with the idea of alternative modernization; it was imagined as an autochthonous development different from the Western European models.
Abstract The critique of the city is an almost obligatory cliché of the 20thcentury cultural criticism. This paper offers a parallel critical analysis of the conceptions of American ecologist Lewis Mumford and Hungarian historian István Hajnal. They were contemporaries, and their approaches had been inspired by interwar cultural criticism. Mumford did not hate the city: it was, for him, the engine of history, a reservoir of cultural creativeness. The theory of Hajnal, from many aspects, runs parallel with Mumford's – moreover, the Hungarian historian gives a detailed theory on the types of European city. What connects them is an ecological approach.
While workplace communication is a well-established field in communication studies, empirical research based on samples of communication processes taking place in actual organisations is still scarce. Although a distinct line of research on meetings has recently emerged and established itself as "meeting science", another ubiquitous communication setting, regarding business presentations have received far less attention. In this paper, we argue that a general-purpose theory and a corresponding measuring instrument for the evaluation of the impression made by a presentation on the audience would greatly enhance our understanding of the factors that determine the efficiency of presentations. We present the theoretical framework and the indicators in such an inventory, which we have developed based on the educational literature on public speaking. The construction of this instrument also generated a set of hypotheses about how a speaker's personality traits may be related to various aspects of the impression made by the speaker.
National consciousness, under modern circumstances, takes shape as a picture of a territorial unity, encircled by a contiguous red borderline on the political map, in social imaginary. The map delineating a portion of a geographical territory fenced off from other territories is a typical modern pictorial representation of national community. Modern nation, as it has been described by Benedict Anderson in his seminal book, is an imagined community. Visual imagination construing mental pictures of respective community, of course, was alive in archaic times but the pictorial representation of community was personified; it was embodied in rulers. The geographical image of a political unit was indistinct. What happens to the modern mental image of nation as a territorial unit in the age of globalization? It was a widely shared conviction, in the enthusiastic mood of the 1990s, according to which the image of Net was going to prevail the image of territory in national fancy. Having seen the events of the latest decade this optimism seems to be hasty; a hybrid mental image of nation has been emerging in national consciousness blending archaic, modern and postmodern elements.

Modernity, in philosophical and sociological literature, has "traditionally" been presented as the age when artifacts supplant nature and destroy the originally given natural environment. The process of modernization, from this point of view, is the process of de-naturalization. This widely shared conviction has basically been questioned by Hannah Arendt. During the centuries of modern age, in the detriment of the commonly created and uphold human world, process of re-naturalization has been taking place, Arendt argues. This means, from other aspect, that modernity is the age of world-alienation. It is one of the results of modern science that human beings lose their confidence in the reliability of their senses. The Arendtian critique of modernity, which has deeply been influenced by Martin Heidegger's philosophy, takes a difference between the notions of Earth and world. In Arendt's theory technology enhances the processes of re-naturalization. The problem of the relation of natural and artificial, in The Human Condition (1958), has been inserted in two narratives; one of them is the narrative of cultural criticism and another is that of political philosophy. These narratives have been embedded in different contexts borrowing ambivalences and inconsistencies to Arendt's argumentation.
