Building of greek churches of the gothian and cafisian diocese in the northern azov region ;
The article is intended to systematize data on temple construction in the Northern Azovregion in 1780-1786, to fill in the existing gaps and to pay attention to a number of falseallegations and discursive issues existing in the historiographical tradition. The development ofa network of Greek Orthodox churches in the Northern Azov region was part of theimplementation of far-sighted geopolitical expansionist plans of the Russian Empire to expandthe borders at the expense of the lands of the Ottoman Empire and to use the independent statusof the Crimean Khanate, received under the conditions of the Kyushu-Kainardzhij Peace, as anintermediate stage in the annexation of Crimean peninsula and adjoining mainland territories.By the number of temples, Gothian and Cafisian diocese was not only the smallest among alldioceses of the Russian Empire, but also less than many spiritual boards. Under the leadershipof Metropolitan Ignatius, temples were only in 2 cities and 20 settlements. The specifics of theprocedure preceding the consecration of the temples on the lands of the Gothian and Cafisiandiocese was determined by the simplified structure of the vertical of spiritual power, which, inturn, was conditioned only by the small size of the territoryunder the rule of MetropolitanIgnatius. On the one hand, the mentioned bureaucratic procedure should correspond almost toall legislative documents, which concerned the rest of the dioceses of the Russian Empire. On theother hand, these documents themselves had not yet been so detailed in the regulation of theprocedure and had given a certain backlash in its organization. So while other rulers of theOrthodox dioceses of the Russian Empire personally laid and sanctified the temples only as anexception, in most cases, instructing this to their subordinates, Metropolitan Ignatius personallylaid down and sanctified most of the churches of his diocese.
