The article is devoted to the life and creative activity of the thinker, poet, artist Maximilian Alexandrovich Voloshin, whose anniversary and death are celebrated this year. His biographical pages are revealed, the versatility and brightness of his talent are shown. M. Voloshin played a significant role in the development of Ukrainian cultural and artistic life of the late XIX – early decades of XX century. He was a highly educated man: poet, publicist, literary and art critic, artist, philosopher and had a paradoxical mindset. It was in Crimea, in Koktebel, that M. Voloshin felt inspired, here he discovered his artistic talent and became a talented watercolorist and painted most of his artworks, which reflect his connection with the peninsula. He wrote Cimmeria not from nature, but from his own method of the finished image. Due to this, his favorite Crimean landscapes with poetic inscriptions were published. As a representative of symbolism and Acmeism, in poetry and painting he displayed the history and nature of Crimea. The artist wanted a person to desire to walk on this earth and breathe in the full chest of air while looking at the picture. Maximilian Alexandrovich denied the Russianness of Crimea and condemned its conquest by the Russian Empire and the practice of Russian rule in it.The artist's work has not been adequately evaluated for a long time, so we must objectively continue to study it in order to clarify the importance of his creative heritage in contemporary public life and to learn experiences and lessons for future generations of Ukrainians and Russians.
The article describes the state of scientific research on the history of the formation of the Ukrainian community in Crimea in the late 18th – early 21st century, which appeared in the 1990s – early 2000s, when, after the revival of its autonomy, there was a breakthrough in research on various aspects of Crimean history, and written at a new, higher level on the principles of historicism, objectivity, alternativeness. It is the post-Soviet period that is characterized by extensive scholarly discussions on the history of Crimea and the prospects for its development. Particular attention is paid to the analysis of works, which comprehend the debatable issues of the common historical destiny of Ukraine and Crimea, debunk the myths of "originally Russian Crimea", highlight the problems of solving the Crimean question in 1917–1920, chronology of P. Bolbachan's campaign, proclamation of Crimean republics in 1918–1921, the Bolsheviks pursuing a policy of indigenization in the Crimea, the famine of the 1920s–1930s and repression on the peninsula, as well as guerrilla warfare during World War II. The author claims that after 1991, hundreds of academic monographs and articles appeared, dozens of dissertations were defended, and a number of academic conferences on various areas of Crimean history were held.It is established that there is no comprehensive study of the formation of the community of Ukrainians in Crimea at the end of the 18th – beginning of the 21st century. Scarcely studied is the sociopolitical, demographic, economic situation of Ukrainians on the peninsula during the collapse of the Russian Empire and the existence of national and quasi-state formations on its territory, as well as the policy of Crimean regional governments towards Ukrainians and the policy of UPR and Ukrainian State governments regarding the protection of Ukrainians in Crimea, its state affiliation, etc. A comprehensive analysis is required for the policy of Ukraine towards the Ukrainian ethnic community of the Autonomous Republic of Crimea and the city of Sevastopol in 1991–2014, as well as the occupation policy of the Russian Federation after 2014, which led to discrimination against Crimean Ukrainians and the threat of assimilation of some of them. The annexation of Crimea, which took place in violation of the Constitutions of Ukraine and the ARC, laws of Ukraine and universally recognized international legal norms, rights and freedoms of Ukrainian citizens living in Crimea, was a pre-arranged special operation, information and propaganda policy being one of its key components. Currently, the problems of the emergence and overcoming of pro-Russian identity in Crimea at the present stage and the development of ways to optimize the system of public administration and national security of Ukraine are insufficiently studied.

; The article describes the state of scholarly research of the history of the Ukrainian-Polish Military and Political Alliance of 1920.It studies the problems of Ukrainian-Polish relations in 1919–1920, in particular the specifics of negotiations between Ukraine and Poland during that period, the main moments of preparation and conclusion of the Warsaw Pact between the Ukrainian People's Republic and the Commonwealth in April 1920. Attention is drawn to the reaction of various Ukrainian and Polish political forces to the signing of Pilsudski-Petliura Pact. The sociopolitical preconditions, the main events of the Ukrainian-Polish-Soviet War of 1920 are reconstructed, and the role of S. Petliura and J. Pilsudski in them is highlighted. The cooperation between Ukraine and Poland in the struggle against Bolshevist aggression is analyzed, as well as the contradictions that arose then in the relations between the two peoples. The attitude of the two state leaders towards the events that took place in Ukraine in 1919–1920 is singled out. The results of the Ukrainian-Polish-Soviet confrontation for Poland and Ukraine and its influence on Ukrainian-Polish mutual understanding in the future are comprehended. The author claims that the preparation and signing of the Pilsudski-Petliura Pact provoked a negative reaction from the majority of Ukrainian and Polish political forces and was not supported by them. The short-lived Ukrainian-Polish Military-Political Alliance collapsed in 1920 due to a number of foreign policy factors. The main ones are the Entente's negative treatment of Ukraine, ambiguous attitude towards the union of different political parties of both countries, late signing of the treaty and pragmatism of J. Pilsudski, who in his policy adhered primarily to the interests of Poland and relied on the Entente for a long time.At the same time, the signing of the Warsaw Pact facilitated Ukraine's entry into the international arena. As a result of cooperation with Poland, the Ukrainians continued the armed struggle for their independence against the RSFSR in 1920 and, together with Poland, did not allow it to advance further into Western Europe to bring the "world revolution" there. The signing of the Treaty of Riga in March 1921 and the end of the Ukrainian-Polish-Bolshevik War meant the defeat of the national liberation struggle of 1917–1921.

The article analyzes the specifics of the establishment and functioning of the southeastern Soviet republics in the territory of Ukraine (Donetsk-Kryvyi Rih Soviet Republic, Odesa Soviet Republic, and Soviet Socialist Republic of Taurida) in 1918, as well as "LPR" and "DPR" in 2014; shows their specific participation in Russia's hybrid warfare against Ukraine in a symmetrical comparison. The author emphasizes that the formation of these republics was a means of Bolshevist aggression in the early 20th century. Historical parallels and consequences are drawn between the Russian-Ukrainian wars of 1917–1921 and the most recent war (since 2014), their prerequisites, common features and war-waging experience. It is alleged that the activities of Soviet quasi-states had a common feature: they were created by analogy with the RSFSR, thus violating an important condition that required coordinating such actions with the expressed will of the entire population of the territory. The pseudorepublics even did not consider themselves formally Ukrainian, although the majority of their population was Ukrainian. This fact, as well as the thoughtless social and economic policy, confiscation of private property in the public interest, sending echelons with bread to the north, public fundraising (indemnity), abolition of commodity-money relations, and the introduction of labor control disorganized all spheres of life.Today it is evident that the Russian leadership is trying to destroy Ukrainian independence and revive the great imperial state. The present-day hybrid Russian-Ukrainian warfare is not, to a large extent, a new type of aggression. Putin's policy is very similar to the Bolsheviks' actions 100 years ago: we see the same creation of parallel puppet "authorities", their subsequent provision with military assistance, and thus formation of the external aggression as "internal civil war", or "brotherly assistance", etc.
During the formation of Ukrainian statehood in Carpatho-Ukraine in 1938–1939, it was necessary to form armed formations for its protection. The "Carpathian Sich" was created here (the full name is the People's Defense Organization "Carpathian Sich") for this purpose. The main idea of the article is to consider the process of forming this organization, its stuffing and providing weapons, and to trace the participation of its members in the defense of Carpatho-Ukraine.The "Carpathian Sich" had 10 teams (squads) in the districts and 5 permanent garrisons for military training. The emblem of the organization was a trident with a sword, similar to the emblem of the OUN. All organization's ribands, uniforms, banners and political posters also had the OUN's symbols. On November 9, 1938, the constituent assembly of the "Carpathian Sich" took place in Khust. The charter of the organization, which determined the purpose, task, structure, etc., was approved there. The congresses of the "Carpathian Sich" became important stages in its organizational formation. The organization's structure and ideological basis were laid at the First Congress on December 4, 1938 in Khust. The Second congress on February 19, 1939 in Khust noted the fact of international updating of the "Ukrainian question" and declared that its solution would be possible only if the nationalist concept of the creation of independent states in Eastern Europe would be adopted. On January 1, 1939, the Main Office of Women's Departments of the "Carpathian Sich" was formed (its head was S. Tysovska, the deputy was M. Khiminets). In January-March 1939, "Women's Sich" was able to expand its activity in all districts of Carpatho-Ukraine, to develop the structure of women's departments, to form their own uniform, to conduct sanitary, social and political as well intelligence schools, and to organize an infirmary for their wounded members in Khust. Important areas of the activity of the "Carpathian Sich" in 1938–1939 were cultural and educational work and participation in protecting the borders of Carpathian Ruthenia from the attacks of Hungarian and Polish sabotage groups and terrorist ones that tried to destabilize the political and social situation in the region. On March 13, 1939, on the streets of Khust appeared barricades, street battles started. According to various data, between 40 and 150 members of the "Carpathian Sich" fell, about 50 persons were wounded in the battles with the Czechs in Khust on the night of March 13 to March 14, 1941. The bloody clashes on March 13–14, 1939 weakened the "Carpathian Sich" greatly and made it impossible for its joint actions with the Czech troops against the Hungarian aggressor. The controversies among the Ukrainians themselves became the factor that negatively affected the political situation in the region. During March 15–16, 1939, the main battles between the defenders of Ukrainian statehood and the Hungarian invaders were carried out. The courageous resistance of the "Carpathian Sich" to the Hungarian occupants in Krasne Pole made it possible for the deputies of the Carpatho-Ukraine's diet to approve important historical documents, to declare the creation of the independent state "Carpatho-Ukraine", to elect its president A. Voloshyn, to appoint the government, and to approve the state attributes.Consequently, since formation of the "Carpathian Sich" in November 1938, that semi-militarized organization has undergone a qualitative evolution, and in March 1939 it emerged as the armed forces of the Carpatho-Ukraine and fought for Ukraine's independence. The reasons for defeat was the lack of its own legal basis for its activities as a military formation; poor providing weapons, ammunition and military equipment; the failures of Ukrainian emigration and the OUN abroad in obtaining weapons for the "Carpathian Sich" and so on. The confrontation between the "Carpathian Sich" and the Hungarian troops became one of the first manifestations of the armed counteraction to the offensive of totalitarianism in Europe.
; The article analyzes the coverage of the first Bolshevik-Ukrainian war (December 1917 – April 1918), which began as a result of the conflict between the UPR and the RSFSR, by modern Ukrainian scientists. In the days of Ukraine's independence, a considerable amount of research on this confrontation appeared. These are the works of V. Verstiuk, O. Boiko, L. Harcheva, V. Yeshpanov, Ya. Tynchenko, V. Savchenko, V. Soldatenko, S. Lytvyn, M. Kovalchuk, and others. This historiographical exploration focuses on new approaches and interpretations in the writings of domestic scientists on the most important events of this war.It has been investigated that the scientific literature has covered in great detail the causes of the first Soviet-Ukrainian war and the peculiarities of the events of late 1917, early 1918, as well as the more important motives for military failures of national formations. The majority of modern domestic researchers are claimed to conclude that the UPR was not ready for war. Their works analyze the causes and consequences of the conflict between V. Vynnychenko and S. Petliura; the latter's measures to build the Ukrainian army; his steps to strengthen Ukraine's defense capability and prepare for the counteraction against the Bolshevist aggression in November–December 1917. Scientists lay the main responsibility for the difficult situation on V. Vynnychenko as the head of the Ukrainian government, who failed to secure Ukraine's defense and did not support S. Petliura's efforts to organize resistance to the Bolsheviks' offensive. The questions of the UPR's readiness for the war with the RSFSR, its origins and beginning, failure in the creation of a national army remain controversial in the latest scientific works. The scientists disagree on the fighting capacity of the military forces, both Ukrainian and Soviet, and their numbers. These differences in figures are quite significant and require further clarification.

; The article analyzes the coverage of the first Bolshevik-Ukrainian war (December 1917 – April 1918), which began as a result of the conflict between the UPR and the RSFSR, by modern Ukrainian scientists.
